Transfer Case Problem on 2003 SE AWD

The transfer case gremlin struck last night 180 miles from home. AWD was off and there were no warning lights.

I was driving down the interstate, slowed down below 20 miles per hour to go through a toll booth, and then gave it a little gas to get back up to speed when I started hearing a loud clunking from the undercarriage. Fortunately, there was little traffic on the road. Unfortunately, it was pouring rain..

I had it towed to the closest Nissan dealership. They are telling me that it's going to cost around $3500 to fix. It is out of warranty, at 117K miles, and, from what I can tell, the extended CVT warranty doesn't apply.

I've noticed that other people have had similar issues. Does anyine know if Nissan has issued a recall for this yet? or are they still blaming it on user error?

David,

Sorry, but there is no good news to be had. Unfortunately Nissan does not believe there is an issue with the transfer case so they have no program to deal with the cost of replacement.

The transfer case is as simple as they come. It is made up of 2 gears, 4 bearings and 4 seals, that's it. No chains, no clutches, no viscous couplings. Yet Nissan somehow under-engineered it. When the oil seal fails, the fluid leaks out, the bearings seize, you hear a loud clunking sound from under the car, and... you know the rest.
