True Cost of Ownership

Thought people might be interested in some of the statistics that I have been collecting for my Murano.

Most people (I would say ALMOST all, save just a couple of us nut-jobs) have no idea what the true cost of ownership is for their vehicles. People think about the purchase price, sometimes about the interest on their loans, and occasionally know how much they pay for gas on a semi-weekly basis, but not the overall package.

As most of you know, I have a seriously large and very very straight and sturdy pole shoved right up my arse when it comes to keeping records about my vehicles. :D

I have been keeping track of EVERYTHING related to my murano, including insurance, registration, all repairs/accessories/maintenance, gas statistics (every tank I record date, brand, grade, gallons, total price, number of miles, MPG and Average Speed from the trip computer, then calculate price/gallon, cost per mile, mpg and running mpg based on those numbers).

Here's my summary page listing some key overall figures.

Couple of additional notes to explain some of the numbers.

Loan is a running total, not the total purchase price. Loan will be fully paid off in March of 2010. I bought the vehicle for $500 under invoice price and financed the entire thing at 3%.

Note that "maintenance" includes oil changes, repairs, car washes, accessories, and donations to this forum. :)

Gas has ALWAYS been premium fuel, and ALMOST always from Chevron.

I also just noticed that my "Per day/month/year" mile calculations at the bottom are incorrect (I just added those on this morning and referenced the wrong field). They should be like this:
40.6
1237.2
14846.5

That's it.
I'm gonna grab my iPod, select Tennessee Bird Walk and head out the door.
Cars are too damn expensive.

I am still laughing about your description of your record-keeping. :2: That's excellent!

Seems every post I write gets NJJoe laughing at me.... I'm wondering if that's a good thing! ;)

I'll post up my file somewhere for people to grab if they so choose. Have to remove the personal info first and find a place to post it, perhaps in the Knowledge base on this forum.

I like seeing these kinds of statistics. I've started up the same kind of thing for my electric car, of course. I'm monitoring the power used in charging via a "Kill-A-Watt" meter, and using the cost per kwh on my bill to get the real "gas" cost. Of course, that vehicle was paid for completely up front, so the cost/day numbers and whatnot are going to be pretty steep to start with, but should drop off quite quickly since there is virtually no maintenance, very little electric cost, and I'm driving it every day instead of my Murano.

Hmm... reminds me of the scene from Goodfellas...

Henry Hill: You're a pistol, you're really funny. You're really funny.

Tommy DeVito: What do you mean I'm funny?

Henry Hill: It's funny, you know. It's a good story, it's funny, you're a funny guy.

Tommy DeVito: what do you mean, you mean the way I talk? What?

Henry Hill: It's just, you know. You're just funny, it's... funny, the way you tell the story and everything.

Tommy DeVito: Funny how? What's funny about it?

Anthony Stabile: Tommy no, You got it all wrong.

Tommy DeVito: Oh, oh, Anthony. He's a big boy, he knows what he said. What did ya say? Funny how?

Henry Hill: Jus...

Tommy DeVito: What?

Henry Hill: Just... ya know... you're funny.

Tommy DeVito: You mean, let me understand this cause, ya know maybe it's me, I'm a little !@#$% up maybe, but I'm funny how, I mean funny like I'm a clown, I amuse you? I make you laugh, I'm here to !@#$% amuse you? What do you mean funny, funny how? How am I funny?

Henry Hill: Just... you know, how you tell the story, what?

Tommy DeVito: No, no, I don't know, you said it. How do I know? You said I'm funny. How the !@#$% am I funny, what the !@#$% is so funny about me? Tell me, tell me what's funny!

Henry Hill: [long pause] Get the !@#$% out of here, Tommy!

Tommy DeVito: Ya mother!@#$%! I almost had him, I almost had him. Ya stuttering prick ya. Frankie, was he shaking? I wonder about you sometimes, Henry. You may fold under questioning.
