I have a 2009 Nissan Murano, there was no owners manual with it when I got it. Obviously I've Google which kind of fluid I need but the Nissan brand tranny fluid is a bit costly. If it's highly recommend that I use that, so be it. Just wanted to ask around and see what other owners say and recommend

You'll get many different opinions on this topic. Some people will tell you that if you put non-Nissan labeled fluid in your CVT that it will stop working immediately but they can't tell you which ones will do this. I've used Valvoline CVT in my 2010 for the past 2 years and 30k miles (bought with 140k, now 170k). Everything working fine. If you're the kind of owner who reads the manual and does whatever it says, stick with Nissan labeled (Idemitsu brand) fluid you get at the dealership. Otherwise pick a fluid that meets the NS-2 or NS-3 requirement and save the hundred bucks. Either way works. Let us know what you do and how it works out.

Walmart sells a 5-gallon jug of Castrol Transmax CVT (Nissan NS-1, NS-2, NS-3 compliant) for $23-$27. I've been using it in my 2021 since around 67,000 miles, and I'm now at more than double that mileage without anything serious going wrong. There is a slight whine from time to time that started around 115,000 miles, and it's usually 50/50 it will happen on a cold start, and usually goes away after the car is up to operating temperature. I believe other owners have mentioned the whine and were using Nissan brand, so my take away is that fluid brand doesn't make a difference. Whatever's going to happen to the CVT will probably happen due to driving habits, poor maintenance, accidents or normal wear after higher mileage, etc.

I heard from forums, Google searches and people, Valvoline is pretty much the same thing as the Nissan brand transmission fluid. I was going to go with that until I read that if I don't use Nissan brand that it will mess up for sure. That's why I came here to hear what other owners have done. I'm not a rich man but to take care of my car I will do what it takes but if I can save a few bucks, well heck yeah!

The exact reason to stick with OEM. Got $6K if you're wrong? Anything but NS fluid voids any Nissan warranty you may have, or they may extend for the CVT.

I'd rather spend the $207 for a case of NS3 (Amazon) instead of the possibly of having to shell out $6K, just to save a measly $100 using cheaper fluid.

This is no different than using low grade gas to save money, just to have to spend several $K to have their cats replaced at 150K miles instead of the expected life of 250K miles. The money you save by not using top tier/octane gas will never pay the cost of the replacement of the cats.

Have a good day.

Idemitsu is the oem supplier, other than Nissan dealer stuff this is the only other stuff to use. All the other is just baloney labeling.

If you don't think so just ask those outfits for the documents that show Nissan approves their product for use in their transmissions.
