So, There is someone in my area looking to sell a 2003 Murano SE for very cheap and I am just curious what I am going to get myself into.
Here are the details:
193000 Miles
-Missing driver door handle (quick youtube video shows this should not be hard)
-Only goes between 5 - 20 mph. Person states that it will only go as long as you lightly press the gas and will get up to 30 mph on the highway. Also stated that a "mechanic" looked at it and said that on the scan it showed a speed sensor was bad.
My question is can a speed sensor cause this? I know these are notorious for bad CVT transmissions, but is this symptoms of that? Any suggestions.
I am going to do my own scan and "drive" it and see what I can figure out, but did not know if anyone on hear would have any suggestions.

Thanks

If it's in decent shape, buy it for $600 and part it out on ebay. You should be able to turn a nice profit just from selling a few key or oddball parts. However 1st Gen parts are getting easier to come by, so you may be competing with a lot of sellers.

You can always go to a salvage yard and try your luck with a used CVT... They can last. I have a thread here about a secondary speed sensor issue that still allowed my 2003 SE AWD to run fine after warming it up and doing a minor ritual when the car is first cold. Drove 95% normal after it was warmed up and cruised at any speed desired.

$600 sounds cheap, but you have to think about cost of registering the car, insurance, any safety or emissions problems that could make the car fail a State inspection process, etc. Once you're in for $600, things can snowball out of control very fast with a 1st gen...or not.

So, with that, there's only one thing left to consider...

Unless you're in the business of selling used car parts and have room to store the hulk. RUN AWAY. It's a parts car, and you will likely spend $5000 or more to get it operating correctly. Transmissions in these are to be avoided.

Even for 600$? Figured it running and somewhat driving would be worth that
A car that can only go 30 mph is useless, and I fear it is going to take way too much money to fix that problem. I highly doubt the speed sensor story. Does he mean a wheel speed sensor? If so, I've had those go bad, and it does not cause the car to not be able to run at full speed. It just disabled the antilock brake system. Ask yourself this. If it is "just a speed sensor", then why doesn't HE fix the problem and then sell the car, since it would be a much more attractive and easy sell if the car would run at highway speed. I highly suspect the seller knows this is a major failure and just wants to get rid of the car.
I agree. Let this one go.

Steer clear of that car, not worth it.

The transmission is gone. Replacing it with a new one will cost you 5K.

My 1st gen Murano’s transmission failed at 165K.

My 2nd gen Murano’s transmission failed at 256K, so I had it replaced. The 2nd gen have a beefer transmision. Currently that 2010 Murano (bought new) has 353K on the motor and 100K on the new transmission.
Best vehicle Ive ever owned.

OP: have you made up your mind, and preferably

Just curious if you drive aggressively or rather normally. Trying to determine if the way a CVT-based car is driven affects the longevity of the CVT's life.
