You can just remove the negative terminal from the battery for a few minutes will clear it or you can go to a shop that will clear it for free. Otherwise driving it should clear as long as its not hard coded in the system.
Initially, I thought that too but removing the negative battery cable did not work for me. I had to drive it as noted above.

Update - I performed the repair this weekend. I had to remove the front grill, front fascia, and part of the wheel well trim. Once the area needed is exposed it is a straight swap of the grill shutter. Once I installed the new part I started the vehicle to verify function and all was well. Reinstalled the trim/fascia/grill and verified function again. Took the car to go grab breakfast about 20 minutes with a freeway run and the check engine light would not extinguish. I ended up running to autozone and picking up an Innova 3020rs ($45ish) code reader and used that to clear the code. After driving the rest of the weekend the light has stayed off and looks to be a successful repair. Now to go get my smog checked!

All in all, was $141 for the shutter, $45 for the code reader, $9 for push pin pliers, and about 2 hours in my garage by myself. If you had a handy friend help I bet it would take an hour. We had quotes for $1000 and $800 to get this fixed.

If anyone reading this needs to perform this repair the push pin pliers are a must. Access to a lift would also help tremendously.

Thanks for all the input everyone.

I had to remove the front bumper and I seriously doubt you will be able to accomplish the job without doing so. Getting the bumper off is not that big of a deal. And no, you can't just buy the actuator. At least not new. The poster above kept the actuator and removed the grilles to prevent the actuator from getting damaged like yours was. If the actuator is working, no CEL. Your actuator is damaged and that is why you can move shutters freely and yet get the CEL.
I am trying to figure out why people say you can’t buy just the actuator that’s nonsense. They say you can’t because they want you to pay for a new active air shutter at the tune of 150-200 dollars. I took my active air shutter out of my 2016 Murano and found there were 3 screws holding the actuator on the shutter, I removed the actuator thinking ok if I can remove it then there is a replacement. The actuator was bound up tight as tight can be but the shutters worked fine manually moving them. So did some research and found that for actually sells the actuators for these actuators. Had I known that I would have gotten actuator put the shutters in closed position and put actuator in at a cost of 80 dollars and saved money. So I saved old shutter less motor and will get new actuator for it from FORD and have it for a spare. Recommendation do not throw out the old shutter unless the fins are damaged use as a spare for down the road. Happy motoring!!

can the actuator be replaced with the grill still on/in the car and without taking off the front bumper?! do you have a part number for the actuator? does the shutter have to be in the closed position in order to put the actuator in? i'm asking because my grill fins will move when i push on 'em but aren't working otherwise and are throwing the damn code!
thanks for the information!

Unfortunately you will have to remove the shutter to remove the actuator. Taking the bumper apart isn’t hard to do. The shutter fins moved on mine but when I took the actuator out it was pretty bound up so bought whole new unit with actuator on it not knowing I could get the actuator and save a lot of money. Yes when you take the actuator out and replace with new one make sure the fins are closed before doing so then attach new actuator by putting the 3 screws back in. Then re-install. Once you have the bumper off there are 2 10mm screws on each side and to plastic push clips at the bottom you have to remove as well. It will take about 1 1/2 hrs being patient. There are a lot of push pins to remove under the hood in the front. Then the trim around the wheel well needs to be removed as well to access to bolts on each side of the bumper as well as a few push pins. For the trim you have to gently pull from the front of the vehicle back then slide it towards the fron as it has butterfly clips you don’t wanna break as I did and then had to buy a few to replace, don’t try and pull it straight out or they will break and possibly break the clip on the trim as well. Yes I do have the part # go do a search for ford parts and put in FORD EP5Z-10884-A that’s the part you need. I matched it with mine and it’s the same exact thing. I don’t believe they have changed much for most shutters. Have anymore questions fell free to ask. Good luck.

that's what i was afraid of. oh well, i guess there's no getting out of it though i had hoped. the price of the ford actuator motor seems to be ~ $80 while the factory grille w/ motor is ~ $140. if the whole thing has to come out anyhow and with the price difference what it is and with the factory part being the factory part, i'll probably just get the whole thing and be done with it. it would be a shame to get in there and find the grille's sprocket is stripped and that a new motor won't help fix that. since i only want to disassemble once and want to be done asap once i start. thanks for the super fast response and all the original info also.

I was saying if you take out the old shutter remove the motor and you find it to be bound up but the shutter moves freely after removing the actuator and the sprocket gear on the old one is still good don’t throw away but keep as spare in case the new one goes south and you can purchase the actuator for it install and you don’t have to pay another 140+ to replace the one you have. Your call though Good Luck!

Not much info online to change the shutter assembly for my 2015 Murano Platinum except from the aforementioned manuals. I printed off the ext. sections and attempted the repair myself. Many, many pushpins along with a few screws and bolts. Started at the top and pulled the guides above the radiator, then pulled the grill along with disconnecting the camera, then pulled the bumper cover by partially removing the outer wheel trim, then removing the pushpins and bolts underneath the front spoiler, (not removing the spoiler), then unsnaping each side of the bumper cover from the fender and 2 pushpins on top of the bumper cover. After removing the bumper cover, I was able to change out the shutter assembly without removing the bumper, just 1-10mm bolt on each side and 2 pushpins. Once changed, I started the vehicle with the shutter in the closed position and it worked fine. I then re-attached everything in the reverse order. After about 10 miles and 2-3 starts later, the CEL light went off. And yes, you could just change the actuator by itself, but I decided to change out the whole assembly. Thanks for all of the input from the community!

Would actuator motor #A24041153212, listed for '17-'18 Altima & '18-'24 Murano and others, work as well as the Ford #EP5Z-10884-A?
Pictures sure look like it's the same part, but of course that's not a reliable credential.

No!

Have a good day.

I hit a deer about 8 months ago which messed up the front of my car. I took to a collision shop for repair. Now I am getting the P059F light on. Could this be related to the accident? The collision shop gave me a 3 year warranty. Is it a long shot they would warranty for this code?;

The active grille shutter is at the front of the car so, yes, it absolutely can be related.

You'll have to read the fine print of the warranty to see what it does and does not cover.

Did the shop have to replace the active grille shutter? If yes, then there should be a manufacturer warranty on that part irrespective of the collision shop's warranty, which the shop should honor if they installed it. That's, if the grille shutter itself is defective.

But, the bottom line is that there needs to be some diagnosis to find out the root of the problem.

Hey Frank,
I’ve purchased new shutters-when I install them, does the actuator have to be in any particular position? Also, how did you test the actuator to see if it was good? If its the actuator, can you buy it aftermarket?

No!

In fact, working on a 2015 Murano out of town, i brought with me the actuator pulled from a 2015 MKZ->

, but the connector on the vehicle did NOT match this part.

Part #A24041153212, i ordered on eBay for <$20 fit and works perfectly.

🤨 I cannot say if someone previously may have modified this vehicle, but the failed actuator i removed is also part #A24041153212. I couldn't have known this before disassembling the front fascia, but sure was glad to have brought both with me!

The Ford #EP5Z-10884-A was NOT the correct part in our case.

Hey all. Here's a question that I haven't seen asked: what if the active grill is in the open position and it's left like that? Mine threw the code this morning and the shutter is in the open position and has no give, meaning I tried to move it with a flat screwdriver and it doesn't move. What is the drawback in just leaving it open?
