NOTE (added by jaak): Please vote in this poll, even if your alternator has not failed. If you suffer the bad luck of it failing later, Private Message Eric L. and he will adjust the poll numbers to change your vote. The more votes, the better accuracy.

Please vote, even if you just like to read, not post. Thanks!

WARNING: BRAKE AND BATTERY LIGHT IS AN INDICATION OF PENDING ALTERNATOR FAILURE

After voting, please see this post for more details on the brake and battery light:

=======================

After my alternator called it quits last week, I've decided to put up an alternator poll.

Please answer yes for bad alternator, no for good alternator in the poll. Also post a brief message beneath with the build date of your Murano if you've had a failure.

My info:

Failure at 13,700 miles. Build date 04/03.

As I posted in the Consumer Complaints thread, I had reported my alternator failer to the NHTSA and I received a call today from an investigator looking into the problem. Hopefully, if we get some more reports, there will be some action taken with Nissan.

woogi4u, your only hope is that if NTHSA investigate

and find this as defect and force nissan to recall.

Other than that, i dont see how lemon law will help you.
There are other forum members (from freshalloy forum) whose alt failed 3 times

Please, file the complain...

I'm sure there are many unreported failures, either here, FA, or NHTSA.

I believe the alternator failure to be major problem.

#234 ·
I agree, this is a real problem and either a design or assembly error.

The failure rate is much too high.

My alternator just failed at 24,300 miles. Dealer had the alternator replaced the next day and it was back in my hands.

#237 ·
Bump...

Please vote if you haven't, even if your alternator has NOT failed.

Please let me know if you voted no failure and now it has, as I will update this. You can tell me here, or PM me and I'll remove one count from not failed and add one to failed.

And to be fair, tell me if you've had more than one failure and I'll add another to the failed list.

You can just picture a Nissan North America Marketing guy covering his head with his arms and chanting... "Alternator? We don't have an Alternator problem!"

I understand they're teaching the service advisors to put their hands on their ears and go "la la la la la la la la" everytime they hear the word alternator.

Actually Jaak I could imagine the service manager telling a worried customer "Alternator? Nah, the Murano doesn't have one of those! BTW remember to use premium or your engine will rattle!" :D

alternator failure

Alternator failed at 19,000 mi. Battery and brake light went on, called the dealership, and they said, get it right in, its the alternator. Didn't get a chance to get it there, by the time I left work, it died at a busy light in rush hour. People behind me blowing horns, can you believe it? Any way, had to be towed at dealer expense.
Its a 2003, SLE, silver

briant... I will double check on that by calling the dealer...

I heard a rumor today from my local Nissan Dealer
My Local Nissan Dealer said that Nissan NA is about to send out a recall letter for the Murano Alts!!!I hope it is true. Can anyone confirm this?
But i dont think dealers will know about this recall in months. They dont even know there are TSBs sometimes (sigh)
Anyone here work with nissan usa?

Got a call from NTHSA today. They are on this thing now. So, now is the time for those that have not filed a complaint. The representative told me that they are actively pursuing this and calling people that have filed complaints. In my written complaint I had mentioned this forum and he informed me that he had checked it out before calling me. He agreed that it is definitely a safety issue and that Nissan does in fact know about it.

Anyway, they are in the "fact gathering" stage but he assured me that they are going to hold Nissan's feet to the fire on this. I told him our main complaint has been Nissan's denial of the problem which of course leaves us wondering whether our replacement alternators are going to fail also as indeed some have.

So, maybe we're finally on our way to getting this alternator problem solved.
Stay tuned!

Jim

I also got a phone message from someone at the U.S. Department of Transportation following up on the issue, but was too late calling back to reach her today. I'll report back here as well on the jist of the conversation next week.

Progress, progress... :)

The US DOT agent just called back and we had a long conversation about the circumstances of my alternator failure. She was very interested in details such as speed at warning, speed at failure, towing, part availability, and length of time before I had the vehicle back. She said that they are just starting the investigation by calling people who filed complaints with the NHTSA, and will be looking at the nissanmurano and freshalloy and forums as well. Let's see what happens.

If you've had a failure, please take the time to report it to the NHTSA at http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/complain/

I was also contacted as a result of a complaint I submitted about the MO alternator. I was glad to see they followed up. She asked alot about the exact circumstances when the vehicle failed. We talked for 10 to 15 minutes and she said they had a few complaints so they were beginning an investigation. Hope Nissan recalls.

As of 11/6/2004, the nthsa form does not have nissan murano in the combo box ..

hence we can not file a complain for a murano? It looks like that for the 2003 and 2004 model year, we can only file a complain for nissan maxima and frontier...

Anyone with alternator failure on their MO care to call NTHSA and ask why? Their phone number is: 1-888-327-4236.
I dont have my alt failure yet, so if i call to inquire on this, it will sound weird to the operator.

Glad to know that DOT NTHSA start to take action.

What disturbs me the most about this, is that people like us that frequent these forums are and incredible minority. Imagine the number of people that have had failures and have been charged by unscrupulous dealers for the replacement, not only to the alternator, but for the battery.

Good to know Nissan's doing better financially. It should make it easier for them to bear the cost of the recall and the damage to their reputation, so that they can better invest in their QC and design on this. (As well as the steering pump).
