Hi all, Happy New Year

My first time on here so lets go

I have recently purchased a 07 Murano. My first tank of premium unleaded fuel has come to an end and I have worked out that I am only getting 15 mpg. I travel 16 miles (25.5km) a day at moving between speeds of 40 to 50 mph (65-80kph). I expected mid 20’s so am very concerned.

I am thinking of trying a K&N filter to see if this helps……Do they work?

If you have any idea’s I will welcome them all .

Cheers

I have found that if I drive a steady 45 mph I can achieve 30 mpg. However, that is with a warmed-up and broken-in engine running Mobil-1 on flat ground with a very light foot.

How many miles are on your MO? Fuel efficiency continues to increase until it peaks at around 10,000 miles.

Are you running stock tires and wheels? The OEM Goodyears have proven to have relatively low rolling resistance. Cannot say the same for aftermarket or oversized tires.

During your 16-mile jaunt do you vary the speeds? Fuel efficiency wil drop significantly in stop-and-go traffic and/or with hard acceleration.

A K&N filter will not have a significant impact on your fuel economy as compared to a clean OEM filter. In other words, the K&N filter will certainly not give you the mid-twenties you were expecting.

Welcome and with the low temps I expect y'all have over there, be sure to pump the tire psi to its listed maximum when they are 'cold'.

Thanks for the response.

The Mo has just done 10,600 and is running on Dunlop tyres ST20's. It is quite a steady drive with only one or two junction to stop at.
I will check out the tyre pressures to make sure they are correct and hold back with the filter. I have phoned the dealer I bought it from and they are going to give it the once over for me on Monday to make sure all is ok.

I had worked out mpg against the fuel the garage had told me they had put the tank. I filled it again today and I think I was told a porky. I was expecting to pay £70 to fill when it actually filled at £55. I am going to see what miles I can get out of the second tank and re calculate. Thanks for the advice much appreciated. Yes it is pretty cold here at the mo

Hey all, I just wanted to say that since I have purchased my 05 Murano, I have never put in premium fuel, only regular. I do put in the fuel injector every 3,000 miles, since the car has almost 90,000 miles. The car tells me that I usually do 17.8 mpg. Is this low compared to the rest of you?

With that many miles , have you changed your sparkplugs?. I know that the Nissan is saying that thes platium plated plugs can last up to 160,000 Kms ( 98000 miles) but I personally have my doubts. I just chaged out my plugs at 120,000 Kms and my fuel ecnomy improved by 15% for highway conditions.

MM-

That all depends on how and where you drive.

If your driving consists of city driving with lots of stop-on-go conditions then 17.8 is very good. However, if you spend 99% of the time on the highway driving 60 mph then 17.8 is pretty poor.

What are your conditions like?

Lizard -- Since your MO is pretty young I would expect your MPG to be about 20. This takes into consideration the difference in ambient temperature, the difference in winter fuel vs summer fuel mixture, etc. All vehicles will usually get about 1 or so MPG less than what they get during the warmer months.

My MO was getting less than 20.5 MPG average when the fuel switched over. I was running regular as well. I ran 2 tanks of acetone fuel through and then ran premium and my MPG is back up to about 21-22. I'm probably going to switch back to regular as soon as it warms up here in New Mexico.

Stoker -- What are you driving conditions? If you do a bit of highway driving and don't do that much city driving or idling then your MPG is low. I took a 525 mile round trip over the holiday and averaged about 23.5 MPG. The trip was mostly highway with quite a few large hills. The MO was also loaded down with people, luggage, and tools.

Good luck guys! Maybe it's time to do some system cleaning...

My driving conditions are as follows:
Ambient temp 16C
No wind
Highway speed 100 Kmh ( 62.5 Mph)
Fuel economy as per computer, 7.5 Lts/100 Km which works out to 38 Mpg for a imperial gallon (4.5 Lts)
It should be noted that we were driving from Calgary to Banff for the weekend so the road terrain was up and down.

Before spark plugs change out I was averaging 9.2 Lt/100km. As I reported in this website my plug condition indicated a increase the spark gap ( a pit on the plug gap) that lengthen the spark which would made it cooler.

I personally drive to see how far I can go on a tank as to me, that is the challenge, that is the engineer in me. So when I drive to the west coast I usually get 600 Km for 68lts, which works out to 2/3 of the tank.

To the OP, calculating MPG through just one or two tankfuls won't really give you the true picture. Calculate it over several/many tankfuls in a row.

Also be sure to reset your MPG calculator on every fill up. You may be reading past data which will throw off current data. Other members hadn't reset their MPG meter since the first day they bought their MO and were wondering why the measurement wasn't very accurate.

Great friendly reminder Warhammer, I always reset the fuel calculator everytime I refuel the car as well as the trip meter

I have been back to the dealer today and had them check out the mo. Everything seems to be ok but I still got them to reset the ECU as it does have a learning capability. So if the person driving it before I bought it has a real heavy foot then it would carry on wanting to drive like that for a few hundred miles until it replaced the old memory with the new. This may have made a bit of difference. Still new tank of fuel lets see how she does now. Had first snow of the year here in SE England and she handled B E A UTIFUL!! I might give the girl a tank of premium as a treat

If you think it's a transmission issue maybe you can do a test. When I cruse at 75MPH my RPM's sit at about 2000. If you're consistentally higher than this then you've got a problem in your CVT somewhere. Hopefully this is not the case though.

Thx everybody! I drive most of the time in the city, and about four or five days I do about an hour of highway. About the spark plugs, how much will that cost?
The OEM spark plugs cost only a couple of bucks. so don't worry about them.

The tyres I am running on are Dunlop ST20's 225/65R/18

What size are you using ??
Those are the normal size for UK Muranos. Nothing is wrong.

US Muranos use 235/65/18.

Hi Guys

I have had the best run yet on a tank of fuel. I have currently used half a tank of unleaded 95 oct, and have reach 204 miles (328 km). I have been on the motorway a lot more this time running at 70 mph (112 kph). I believe it works out to be 28 mpg as long as I keep out of the towns which I am really please about. I must say that the Murano does seem to like the long motorway runs. Over all since the reset of the ECU it seems to be driving a little better as well. If I can get back onto the motorway next week I hope to get more then 400 miles from my tank of fuel. I have heard that the price of fuel in the UK might even drop further soon so I am keeping my fingers crossed for that.
I do miss having a MPG display and tempreture display. These little items had been replaced by the Sat Nav it is a shame they could not have kept it all in. Never mind

Happy driving all

Can the ECU be reset by anyone or is it better to have nissan do it?
Nissan can use their computer to do it but you can also do it by disconnecting the negative battery cable for 30 minutes. Beware though, as sometimes wiping the memory on the computer will also lead to driveability problems, mainly a rough idle - this requires the rather length "idle air relearn procedure" which can be found here on the forum (do a search). It is up to you whether the risk is worth it or not.

Hi Everyone,
I've been lurking on this site for close to 3 months now. You guys are doing great! Got a lot of important info from this forum. Just recently bought an '07 Murano with 28000 miles on it.

Had to register 'cos I've been seeing posts with folks getting 20 and above MPG and the highest I've ever gotten was 17.8MPG and that was on the highway.

Granted, my daily routine is a lot of stop-starts and I rarely go above 50mph, but I think getting between 10.3 - 13 MPG is cause for worry.

I don't use premium fuel though, use injector cleaner frequently, but my tires are running at the approved pressure. My tires came with the car so maybe they need a replacement. Wanted to change to larger diameter rim, but not too enthusiastic about that given its impact on my MPG.

Heck of a way to introduce myself.
