CVT not changing gears

Hi guys, we used the Murano to go on holiday with and the trip was about 3000kms there and back excluding driving around, now what I noticed was that when the CVT gearbox gets too hot, it won't change to a higher gear when kicking it back to gain more speed/power in auto or manual, but when driving at night when it's a bit cooler, then the are no issues with the CVT gearbox, any advice would be greatly appreciated

Lucas, keep in mind that there are no gears - just changing drive ratios.

How many miles on that Murano? There have been some reports here of improved behavior from high-mileage CVTs even if the oil test didn't call for it.

Hi guys, ok it seems as though the belts on the cvt gearbox actually slip when it gets very hot or driving the car for a long period.

We drove back home after our holiday and after about 7/8 hrs highway driving, when climbing hills or overtaking other vehicles with the cruise control on and without is when i noticed the belts slipping as the car would change a gear and the belts slip at 3000rpm's and wont stop unless throttle is released and kept at a steady position making it very difficult to overtake other vehicles, it feels like "belt grip, slip, grip, then slip slip slip" then have to take my foot off the accelerator and gently give it some throttle just to maintain the speed.

but when the car has been standing for about an hour then its back to normal until the cvt gets hot again?

The Murano has 146000kms on it

LucasM, have someone check codes, next thing, check CVT fluid level and when did you if ever change CVT fluid? May or may not need changing but the dealer can check the PPM deterioration test.

Lucas, we have many threads explaining some CVT may last almost forever. They have a test to check for deterioration. They measure the level and tell you if it is good or not.
It is not like normal tranny's where you change at 30K miles. Not even close to anything like that.

Ok thanks Bob1, im sure it might need a change of tranny fluid as the issues with the belt slip only occur when driving highways and the cvt is very hot, but if the car is parked for about an hour to cool down then there are no issues, when we drove back home from our holiday which was about a 14hr highway drive, it started to slip about 7-10hrs into the drive, stopped to put more fuel in and then got back on the highway and it ran fine until the cvt got hot again, but i will have the oil checked and changed if needed.
