Gen III - USB Music?

OK, I just loaded up a USB flash drive with about 20 GB of music. When I plugged it into the USB port in my Murano, it said it detected a new USB device, and asked if I wanted to make a new voice profile, or something, for it. I think I said yes... It then said "Reading USB device..." After a couple of minutes it said, "Check USB Device."

So it seems like it won't read it, or play music from a USB drive?

This was my first attempt at doing this. Just wondering if anyone else has played music right from a USB flash drive? I assumed it would work, but maybe it doesn't? Anyway, let me know your experiences doing this.

In the meantime, I'm going to reformat the drive, and put just a few albums on it to see if that makes a difference. It's a 64GB flash drive (USB3). Maybe I'll try a couple of USB flash drives, and see if a different one works.

Thanks for any help! :)

Well, I think I've got the problem figured out. The original USB drive I tried was a USB 3.0 flash drive. I tried a 2.0, and it seemed to work fine. So I'm thinking that it's not compatible with USB 3.0.

One thing that I didn't like was how it showed me my folders. I have the music arranged in this folder structure... Band/Album/Songs. However, when I look at the folders, it just shows me the list of Albums. Anyone know if you can adjust the folder view? I've probably got 60-70 bands on there, so we are talking about hundreds of albums to scroll though to find what you are looking for. Kind of a pain in the ass. Maybe I can use voice commands to get to the band I'm looking for? I'll have to test that out.

Anyway... if you are looking to play tunes from a USB stick, make sure it's not a USB 3.0. :)

OK, so my last post wasn't completely right. I NOW believe that the problem is the Murano only reads USB drives that are formatted as FAT32. The 64GB USB 3.0 drive that I have is formatted as exFAT32. That was the only option it gave me when I tried to reformat in Windows 8. I've done some research, and found a couple of ways to format that flash drive as FAT32, so I'm going to try that.

Oh, here's there reason I've come to the FAT32 conclusion. I had a 16GB USB 2.0 flash drive that was formatted as NTFS. I loaded it up with music, and the Murano wouldn't recognize the drive. The only difference between that one, and one that was working, was that the working one was FAT32. So I reformatted the NTFS flash drive to FAT32, and loaded it back up with exactly what I had on it when it didn't work. I plugged it in, and it worked fine. :)

So there you have it. If you want to play music in your Murano, from a USB flash drive, make sure the drive is formatted as FAT32.

Good luck! :D

OK... for those who may still be interested in this...

I was able to format my 64GB USB 3.0 flash drive in a FAT32 format, using a utility I found on the Web. I loaded up the flash drive with bunches of music, put it in the USB slot in the Murano, and it still didn't work. So frustrating! I'm starting to think that it's just not compatible with a 64GB drive. I'm gonna return that one, and try a 32GB instead. Also getting a USB 2.0 version, as that may still be part of the issue, though I'm not really sure at this point.

I'll let you know how it goes in a couple of weeks...

OK, I got a 32GB flash drive, USB 2.0, and it came already formatted as FAT32. I loaded it up with about 20GB of music, and it worked like a charm!

If you are going to listen to music from a USB flash drive in your 2015 Murano, I suggest that you don't get anything bigger than 32MB, and make sure it's USB 2.0. If you do that, I think it'll work fine for you! Good luck!

Great Post!

Hey I just wanted to say thanks for continuing to update this thread. I just bought a 2015 Mo 2 days ago and was so excited to load up my 64GB with tunes. I just plugged it in and it couldn't read it. Found this thread and now know what I need to do. Thanks!! I hate finding posts that were started and never answered!

No problem! I figured that I wouldn't be the only out there who was trying to do this. Glad you found it useful! Thanks for letting me know, too!

If you're interested, this is the 32GB flash drive I bought on Amazon.
Amazon.com: SanDisk Cruzer Force CZ71 32GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive With Metal Casing- SDCZ71-032G-B35: Computers & Accessories

Best part is... when I opened the box, there were TWO of them in there! I checked my order, and it was marked with "Quantity: 1," but they sent me two! I think it was karma giving me a break after all the trouble I had getting this to work. heheh

I did not figure out the searching. I did get a survey to fill out from Nissan, because I was an early purchaser of a newly redesigned model. I passed on all of the things that could use some tweaking, including the music player, and folder list, for playing music via the USB input from a flash drive. Who knows if that will do anything, but maybe if enough other people have mentioned it, they'll make some changes and put out an update.

I did notice that some of my band folders appeared to remain but most disappeared. It looks to me like bands that had songs in the band level folder (I have some remixes and downloads that I didn't feel like making folders for) remained but if you "album up" all your songs then the band folder isn't listed.

This is an untested theory...

Awesome! Glad you found it useful! It was frustrating figuring it out on my own, so I'm glad a saved you that trouble. :)

Not sure what all file types work with it. MP3 is fine, and I might have some M4A files on there as well. I'm not even sure. If you try different file types, post your findings here!

Thanks!

I just picked up my new Murano last night. I read this conversation ahead of time and it all sounds familiar because I had to go through the same headache of formatting my old Playstation 3 drive to FAT32 so that I could use it with a head unit I bought for my old Nissan Frontier.

So my drive is formatted as FAT32 and has about 29GB of music on it but the system still doesn't want to recognize it. When I plug it in, it does start to read it and says its processing for a good 90 seconds or so and then says to check the USB device.

Any ideas?

I guess that's the kicker then. It's a 60 GB drive in an enclosure. I was hoping as long as I stayed under 32GB worth of files things would be good. Again, it worked on another system that seemed to follow the same rules.

Out of curiosity, with the memory sticks you guys are using, are you able to close the compartment?

I just bought a 64GB PNY USB 3.0 Flash Drive, downloaded about 50 gb of mp3 music. Everything works fine for me. Just saying....
That's awesome! I was never able to get it to work with anything over 32MB. Do you know what format that flash drive is? FAT32? Just curious.

I reality, because of the lack of organization of the music files by the player, I don't think I'd want to scroll through 50GB of music. heheh! That's cool, though! I wonder what the difference is?

Quick tip for mac users if you have your music in folders

A Better Finder Rename 9: The Batch File Renamer for Mac OS X

I used this to rename all my MP3 folders to Artist_Name_Album_Name due to the Murano's inability to do folder hierarchies like my previous Subaru Outback LTD. Now everything shows up alphabetical by artist the way I wanted.

I have no affiliation with the software vendor.

In my iTunes folder my music was listed by folders named by the artist. If I opened that then there were sub-folders for each album for that artist. I just opened each artist folder first then dragged the album folder to the flash drive.

In the car I get a list by album which once selected gives me all the songs for that album. This works just fine for me.

Awesome thread Suitcasejohnny! I used your link to order the flash drive. Amazing little bugger. Everything worked perfectly. Thanks again!
