Hey guys! About a week ago my A/C stopped blowing cold :( Today I went to a shop and the diagnosed the problem and estimated $1,200! Unfortunately, I won't have that kind of money for awhile.

They gave me a list of the parts they said needed to replaced. I'm confident that I can purchase the parts and look up how to replace them. However, I was hoping someone might be able to help me locate and diagnose whether the parts they listed need to be replaced.

Repair List
1. A/C compressor is locked up needs to be replaced. How can I tell if its locked up or not?
2. A/C serp belt. I know 100% this needs to be replaced
3. Drier Assembly. I don't even know what this is? How can I tell if it needs to be replaced?
4. Misc Pag oil. I don't know what this is. Mechanic told me something to oil the parts?

Thanks for your help if you know how to tell if these parts need to be replaced!

All those parts are correct, with the possible exception of the belt - but since you know it's needed, no argument there.

Do a bit of research and you'll find all those are standard components of an AC system. There is also a small screen in the tubing for the AC called an orifice screen or valve, but it's just a few bucks so it doesn't matter price-wise.

Unless refrigerant is included in the quote, it will be additional. The PAG oil is a synthetic lubricant that's installed along with the refrigerant, unless the compressor comes with the oil already installed. The last one I installed had the oil in it and the ports plugged to keep it from leaking out.

Here's the DIY in brief:

Have a shop remove the refrigerant and vacuum out the AC system to remove debris.
Replace compressor, drier (removes water from the system), orifice valve and O-rings in system.
Replace serpentine bent and tensioner, if the tensioner is spring-loaded.
Leave compressor electrical connection unplugged.
Take car to AC shop, have them charge up the system with correct refrigerant and PAG oil lubricant, and connect the compressor electrical clip.
Drive away with cool air.

That's pretty much the entire process. I suggest you get a shop manual for help with the parts replacement.

Thanks A TON for replying! I'm confident I can do the work. I was hoping to get some help with testing those parts though. How can I tell they are bad?

I'm on a tight budget and was thinking the shop was probably just going to put all new parts for everything. I wanted to ask if there's a way I can test those parts before replacing them?

Thanks!

You need to do a lot of reading first before tackling the job. Search the web on all the repairs and inspections you plan to do and get as much info as you can get. Lots of how to videos out there. Even if its for a different vehicle, the procedure is basically the same. Good luck. BTW, ebay is a good source for cheaper aftermarket parts. Sieve through all the listing first on each part you plan to get before deciding which one you want. Compare it from rock auto and local AZ. Usually the popular ones have a ticker showing how many has been sold. I just replaced my 04 radiator last July and got a lifetime warranty for 70 shipped - ebay. Already made a RT drive from Vegas to LAX and the rad is performing as it should.
