Other Wax brands?

I have searched back this thread 75 days only to see Zaino postings.
Has anyone used any other wax/polish brands that they can report results.
Mcguires Gold ect.? I'm shocked that many brands no longer appear in the stores. A few years back there were dozens and now I see about three. Mothers, Mcguires and the old standbys like Turtle wax. Anyone have anything to report other than the Zaino postings. Looks like you guys are sold on Zaino but I'm just sniffing for opinions before my first wax job.
Thanks Bob1

Grip
I was told not to use anything on the vehicle because of the
AutoMate. I never did on my Maxima 5 years and still looked great.
I always wanted to but didn't.

Boy I have sure screwed things up, I had not heard that. All I can say is I better start reading about AutoMate in detail, Wonder if any other member have any info to share. (PS no lights yet but all wired and switched and awaiting)

Fantastic Polishing Product

I found the best and easiest product to use is T.F.P., Total Finish Protection. The only place I can find the product is at the Miami International Auto Show. This product contains Teflon and Polymer Sealants and lasts about a year. Also very easy to put on and take off. These Teflon products used to go under the 3M name of Apple Polishing Systems and cost $175.00 per application when they first came out.

I have the entire Ziano Bros. kit, used it many times, but find it a lot more work with the same results.

Well, a wash, a clay bar and Colinite "Insulator wax" Strange stuff:

1. It does not turn white on black vinyl parts like mud flaps etc. just makes them a woncerful dark black with a satin look.

2. It goes on so easy I can't believe it.

3. takes quite a while to dry to a haze.

4. Wips off easy, no scrubbing.

5. Smooth as glass, it's hard to believe I don't think anything will stick on it.

6. I am going to run some water on waxed surfaces tomorrow and see how it beads.

7. Reflections and shine are very good.

The bottle, yes it's a cream, talks about it being used on high voltage electrical insulators to stop flashover. really wild.

mgthe3 thanks for the tip. NOW 6 MONTHS LATER IT STILL GREAT, SOME SLIPPER GONE BUT NOT ALL WATER BEADS LIKE WHEN I PUT IT ON.

ur welcome Grip!

I have noticed some things about it:
where the water beads then runs off in drools when the beads come together before they make their run (remember mine lives outside, so this occurrs in a light rain) the water will leave a dark streak--more easily seen on light colors, but is easily washed off.
It takes a few rains before the streak appears, this is a sign to me to give her a bath. It shows under my mirrors.

Oh, and it doesn't just bead, it sheets off water. If you pour a bucket on it, you will have very few beads, it all runs off.

Be careful about the black, especially the mud flaps because they are texured and will pool wax in the divots. Apply very sparingly to them and buff HARD. The bottom door trim isn't as textured so you won't have much trouble there. The unpainted lower portion of the nose and the rear of my Mo does very well and no buildup has been noticed.

Enjoy!

Wow, we may have a winner! I love Zaino, or rather the results but it is just too much work and I do not have the time required........so, Collinite may be just what doctor prescribed!

Don, keep us informed please.

mrthe3, great link!

bob1, thanks for kind words...:)

Grip, your next post will make the decision for me. If you say the Collanite is worth it and last, I'm placing my order. If you say it's just alright well I'll have to consider something else. Has anyone tried the #915 Marque D'elegance from Collanite? Please keep us informed.

Will Do. :D

One of the issues with some product companys is they keep changing the name of their products, and perhaps the formulations also.

IMO the most unbiased testing I have seen of a LARGE sample ( Some of the specialty car mags do a good job but tend to only test 4 or 5 products) is done by the Gurureports.
They are at www.gurureports.org
You can buy the Guru report on "waxes" for 9.95.

I haven't used all the waxes and polishes tested. But every one I have ever used, I agree with the findings of Gurureports.
For instance the #1 rated Polish is Zaino.
I concur.
The #1 rated wax is P21S. I concur.

I like their reports and I believe that we need outfits like Gurureports, so I will not divulge all that is in their report.
You should buy it.
In it they explain their methodology, tools they use, tips, etc.

The Guru Reports has tested Collinite.
In their report dated 2002, they tested Collinite Marque de Elegance and Collinite Super Doublecoat.

To put some kind of clarification to this Please note that they tested 42 Products.
(43 if you consider that they tested Lemon Pledge as a joke. Pledge finished last BTW!)

They liked Collinite Marque. It finished #9 It is just wax.
They also liked Collinite doublecoat. It finished #12 It is a wax
PLUS "paint cleaner". (Means that it might be good for mildly oxidized paint. Means it can also impart swirls if you are not careful

They liked both types tested.
Being a paste wax, both were marked down a bit on ease of use and both had a poorly designed container with a small opening.

If you like Wax, you will likely appreciate this wax.
Warning Do NOT believe the longevity claims. These are after all just Carnauba wax. There is no "bonding" that can take place.
However Collinite appears to last <> 8 weeks which IS longer lasting than P21S (Their #1 Rated wax).
This of course is many weeks short of what Zaino and other polymer polishes attain but is about as good as you are ever going to get with a wax. Indicates that their claim that they have a high concentration of Carnauba is true.
Also noted was some difficulty in applying/removing. You DO have to RUB and BUFF! This is also consistent with a pretty high concentration of Carnauba. Maybe even as high as 35% carnauba. It is a Premium wax.
Also note that the gloss is just so-so with a C+ rating compared to P21S rating of A (Degrading in 4 weeks to an A- and in 8 weeks it was a C+)
Even Zaino can't match the gloss of P21s.
Z is at B-. Of course it stays that way for a very long time.

Sounds like Collinite makes a good product.

Homer

PS If Z is too much work, you are doing it wrong.
In the end, polymers are LESS work than Waxes.
Certainly over the course of a year, there is much less work with a polymer.
Waxes NEED to be buffed off. It is a requirement of wax.
Polymers just need to be wiped off. Buffing doesn't help.

THe reason I use waxes sometime is because they are optically IMPURE.
They import a "glow" to a car.
Where Z is just like putting a coat of Glass on a car, the wax imparts almost a golden color.
So sometimes I do both.
Once I have my Zaino to the maintenance stage (About 5 coats applied over the course of a month), I will put on a coat of P21s every now and then (Maybe every 6 weeks or so) just to get that "classic" look.

Homer lots of info.. However, after having used, Megan's, Resin, Zymol and a goodly number of othe waxes and polishes, I do have to say NOTHING was easier than the Collinite to either apply or take off. Maybe because I had clay bared it or the testers did something I don't know about.

But, for me it was simple wipe on, let COMPLETELY dry and wipe off, really a snap. So easy that IF it lasts 8 weeks I would never mind doing it that often.

I am not saying Zano is not good but I don't have that much time to use polishing the MO and I have a small Rotator Tear in my right arm and I just can't rub that hard and that long, anymore. :D

It's so good I can't believe it. Wonderfull recommendation Thanks.

"So Easy and so Good" Sounds like a young lady I once knew. :D

Can I add, "Lasts so Long" ?

Watch the clear coat> I like mothers Gold Carnuba

I have noticed the clear coat scratches easy. I had a mazda and it was dark green and 5 years old was waxed once a month and not many surface scratches. My MO is 2 months old and I have waxed it 5 times and I see many surfaces scratches, why? I am nuts for clean car and I think the MOs paint is not so good! What do you think. The inside panels scratch to easy. Watch the seat belt when you let go and it hits the b piller. See other posts on this..

Homers post has a lot of good info and sure worth your review.

It is a shame that they did not test Colinlite's "Insulator Wax" they say it actually was developed to put on high voltage insulators to help keep them clean and suppress arc-over. To do the intended job the stuff has to last a long time, I guess they don't like to do it too ofter as they charge a lot for the job (pun) Grip :D

I just waxed the SUV with the Collinite which I got in the mail today. I only did half the SUV, hood, and whole right side... plan on finishing it tomorrow. Big different between how much there is compared to my old Nissan 240sx. That thing I could wash and wax in an hour.

Anyway, the collinite... feels amazing. Looks the same with it and without it though. Then again, I'm going by the light in my garage... it's after 10pm now. I took a cup of water and poured it on the hood... it ran right off and didn't more then a few little beaded drops. It was pretty cool.

I hope it holds up in the long run now.

I have used collinite for 5 years.
I am very surprized it took you longer than an hour to wax the Mo, I do the hood, both sides and the hatch, in 20-30 minutes. I do the top a different day.
Don't forget to keep it at least 65 degrees, otherwise it gets very thick and won't shake up.
Wax it twice in one month and you should be good for at least 6 months of water beading. I have seen it last longer. The indication of it getting thin is: the size of the beads will get larger. It will still bead and sheet water, it just won't have the gloss it does when you first apply it.
Apply it sparingly, a little goes a long way. A quarter sized blob will do my hood easy. If you apply too much, it is a waste because you will buff it off. It seems to only get so much of a coat and the rest just buffs off.
Use a micro fiber towel to do the final buff, makes a huge differance.
You should be able to see a huge differance in the sun after application--every high point of a curve will be focused sun light.
If you touch the door edge with oily fingers, it should wipe off like magic. Bug guts etc merely wipe off with a wash--no scrubbing. If you have to scrub anywhere to clean her--it's time to wax again.

It won't stop raining here......grrrrrrr.

I noticed though that my Mo is always dry in one hour in the parking deck, while the filthy cars are still soaked and the inferior wax jobs still have beads----must be the size of the beads.
