Hey, that's good we needed some pictures of the antenna install done that way to complement the roof install.

As far as it taking 3 hours labour to install, I could see that if it's their first one and they're slow readers...;)

Well, I may be a s-l-o-w reader. But hey, there is always first time, right? It took me 2 1/2 hours (including cleaning the mess I left in garage) An hour only was spent for putting the antenna's cables through the rubber boot and sticking antenna to the door compartment. The rest was not a biggy: D (after reading Jaak's posts ...15th.... no wait 16th time; guys from Florida?! helped a lot as well): 2:

Hi Everyone!

I just got my new Murano two weeks ago and installed my XM radio tuner today. I wanted to thank all of you for all of the information you have so graciously posted which made this a successful (but stressful--I am SO non-mechanical) operation. It was certainly appreciated especially since my tuner came from the dealer with absolutely no instructions. Special thanks to Jaak and the Sweaty Guys for your outstanding pictures and input. I would have never have had the nerve to try this on my own without being able to see how you did it. (And I saved about $300 from what the dealer wanted to charge me to install it). You guys rock!

I do have one question: Is there a way to enlarge the length of the XM display? It shows up as one line under the NAV screen and is limited to 8 characters--and it doesn't scroll unlike the RDS display on FM radio. Is there a setting somewhere that I am missing?

Terry

ra3boy, doing the internal antenna install does take longer, because you have to fuss with the wire routing more, to get it under the headliner and through to the hatch.

But for "professional" installers, they should be able to do it much quicker. (If they truly are pros...)

Terry, congrats on getting the courage to do it. Like most things, it's easy when you know how and hard when you think you can't.

Can you enlarge the XM display? No, XM made it that short. The Murano can handle longer, but XM doesn't provide it. Sirius gives you a longer display, as do CD titles.

As far as RDS scrolling, I've yet to see that, but that's most likely due to my local stations RDS format. If anyone sees it scroll in the GTA, please let me know what station!

No way to enlarge as far as I know but if you turn the right button (volume style) it will show the missing portion in another screen. My reciever is a Sirius and I assume the functions would be the same on XM.

I've now seen it in more than one post. You are now famous as the sweaty Florida guy. Ever think about changing your nickname ;)

No offense. I sweat walking out onto the patio let alone tearing apart the trim on the Murano.

No... It doesn't.

Siruis provides the data so there's something to scroll to. XM doesn't, and it's shorter than even the Murano's screen, never mind scrolling to the next screen like the CD or Sirius.

That's all you get on XM.

We went from the "Florida Guys" to the "Sweaty Florida Guys" to now just the "Sweaty Guys". It fits! :D

Actually, the guy in most of the pictures isn't me. That was NitroMan, a great fellow from South Florida who hasn't posted here in quite a while. I usually screw up things like stereo installs, so I begged for help with the install of my SAT radio and wiring harness, and he offered to do the install for me. Another Florida Murano owner was in the same boat, and the two of us drove to South Florida, met up with NitroMan, and spent the afternoon installing one Sirius and one XM satellite radio. It was the usual Florida summer day.....hot and humid! The sweat was real, and I was actually dripping more than NitroMan was! I helped a bit with the install, but NitroMan did the lion's share while I documented the install by taking pictures.

That's the best thing about forums like this one....you meet some pretty nice folks who are more than willing to help each other out! :2:

My wife insisted on going to Disney the last week of July. Phew! Looks like I'm going to be a sweaty Florida guy too!:1:

jaak

Your right about that. End of July is definitely one of the hottest sticky times down here. I usually go to the beach around that time. At least there is a breeze there.

MightyMO posted some delightful pictures of his Murano, on some nice trips. You can see more by clicking on this link.

Within the pictures taken is a good example of how Sirius gives longer text titles on the monochrome Murano display.

I installed XM in my '03 last night. I spent a lot of time studying Jaaks' and the Florida guys site in preparation. Thank you, guys. Your work made this easy. It took me 3 1/2 hours to complete. Not a record by any stretch. I was racing the sun so I didn't have time to stop and take pictures. Sorry.

A couple of snags that I hit that I didn't see specifically spelled out. These are basically newbie mistakes that I wouldn't make again.

First thing was getting the connection out of the back of the radio. I gently pulled and wiggled that thing for 15 minutes and couldn't get it out. I finally was able to turn the radio on it's side and saw that there was a latch on the bottom of the connector that had to be pushed and it slid right out.

The wires on the antenna come bundled up. It's best to unbundled and straighten the two wires out before attaching the antenna to the roof. If you do the center roof mount it's hard to reach them after the antenna is attached in order to bring them through to the cargo area.

I know I didn't have the right tool to make the notch under the rubber trim for the antenna cord guide. I had tin snips and it's hard to make a nice cut with them. Got the job done but there has to be an easier way. I looked for Jaak's notch tool but wasn't able to find it.

All in all, not the hardest project, and it would be much easier the second time we had to do it. And my biggest worry was being able to get the trim off with out breaking any of the latchs. This turned out to be the easiest part of the whole project. The trim pops off easily.

Good Tips!

The tool I purchased from Radio Shack and they still carry it. (I bought it approx. 20 years ago!)

Yes, the connector on the radio needs to be properly disengaged by pushing on the little tab. DON'T PULL THE WIRES or you may end up with a handful of wires, a blown fuse and no clue where they go back... Not to mention a blown radio.

And for the last week, I was a sweaty Florida guy, myself... Walked a million miles at Disney the to the Gulf Coast and a visit to Busch Gardens... Whoa, has Busch ever slid.... It wasn't anywhere as good as I remembered from 9 years ago.

I did it!

Thanks to the Florida Guys and JAAK, I got enough courage and installed the OEM kit I purchased from Grubbs. I only needed a pair of scissors, and a screwdriver. I accomplished the whole ordeal in about 3 hours, I think I could perform it with my eyes closed now I read over the instructions so much.

Pulling out the head unit worried me the most, didn't read the post before and saw that there was a little latch under it to remove the plug.

I purchased a low profile XM Terk antenna, I didn't mount it on the top or in the hatch. What I did was mount in on a little flat area to the left of the center, it was part of the body (I guess you could call it the lip) so I used the magnetic base and stuck it on. When you close it the hatch covers it and you can't see a thing! It's worked well so far cause the only thing above it is the hatch which is plastic anyway. From there I ran the antenna cable down and on the trim (as per instructions). So far so good! The best thing about it is that it's on with magnets and I can just move it if I don't think I'm getting the best reception.

The only thing that is irritating me now is the shortened titles for XM, oh well, I guess thats what you get for the cheaper price.

THANKS TO JAAK AND THE FLORIDA GUYS! Jaak especially was a great help throughout the whole thing. ALSO, everyone here who have put posts up about what didn't and didn't work.

It really isn't hard, just got to take your time and go slow, plus, I saved myself $250 (that's what the stereo place was quoting me on). Also, I had no experience in car stereo, aside from the fact that I like taking things apart.

Ok so I bought it. And my radio sucks because I live in the catskills..Now I need XM Radio Went to Grubbs, Have one question:confused: All I need is the receiver and antenna right?? But which one do I get XM, or Sirius is one better than the other? Is it just the lenth of the song titles that are different? Does one cost more than the other? Can anyone help me???
Thank You in advance.
Patrick

You are also going to need the harness if you have an 03 model. The 04 models already have it preinstalled. I would love to get XM for my 03..... good luck! Are you planning on doing the install yourself? If so please send pictures.
