Sunshade out of tracks

I have a 2015 SL AWD and when I went to open the moon roof the other day the sunshade got caught on something on the way back and now it doesn't roll back up. It still opens but the shade just hangs limp into the car and even hangs down a bit when in the closed position.

I've scowered this forum and google but I haven't been able to find anyone w/ a similar problem and/or solution. The only thing I have found was a notice about a recal on the same year Rogue's sunshade. So I was hoping someone here would have a way to re-align the sunshade vice having to take it back to the dealership.

I have the same issue with my 2015 A year out of warranty. All owners with a 3rd gen sunroof should be aware of this. A poorly designed take up roll has failed. The sunshade mechanism operates much like a roll up blind. The tension on the sunshade is maintained by a spring. When this spring breaks we have the resulting sagging sunshade. It has not fallen out of the tracks. Repairing this is not a small job. The entire headliner is removed and a $500+ sunshade and retract mechanism is replaced. The dealer quoted $1638. It would probably be best to have an auto upholstery/convertible replacement shop handle this. I had probably operated my sunroof ten times in four years.

I found the sunshade assembly for $300 at nissanpartsdeal.com p/n 91250-5AA1A. I would consider doing this myself but it looks like a big job and the curtain airbags are up there. Now on to an automotive upholstery shop. The other option is replacing this with a fixed panel using the existing sunshade fabric. However, at resale the buyer would likely want to include the full repair anyway.

I never use the sunroof but I open the shade on cloudy days. Knowing this I will keep the shade closed from now on. Thanks.

Hello, I to have had this very same issue. I have a used 2015 that was purchased March of 2020 with 55k on it in pretty good shape. About 7 months ago one day herein sunny FL I noticed a big sagging in the sun shade. It's so bad that I can't see from my rear view mirror which I consider a recall-able issue. I googled this problem an low and behold people from all over in different states had this Same issue. It's disappointing that Nissan will not fix this issue as it is clearly a design flaw. I have clamps holding it up for now. I spoke with my buddy who worked at Nissan and he said he never heard of the issue. He gave me a quote of 388.00 For the shade and that was on sale! Here’s of the observation I have while driving with the windows down I noticed drag was going to the shade possibly putting tension on it causing it to break. If there’s drag catching the shade That proves there was a design flaw because you should be able to drive the vehicle without air pockets pulling the shade down. Just an observation though. Now I’m in the process of trying to drive this Ridiculously expensive shade and have somebody install it I won’t charge him $1200 for labor.

I made the same argument about it being a design flaw that is the same as rogue, as well as a safety issue to no avail. Went to Nissan North America as well as as BBB all said tough. Have mine bunched up at the back and on a hot day the heat will kill you. Nissan knows it's an issue and just doesn't care. Was hoping the cost for the repair had come down since I fist checked 3 years ago ...but still cost prohibitive. Have had 4 nissans but this will be our last for awhile this just made it look too cheap

I’ve been lucky so far and haven’t had the issue nor am I aware of anyone that I know with a Mo and a power moonroof having the issue (Or the leaking issue posted on other thread). I imagine it doesn’t qualify for a recall or anything because the number of people experiencing it aren’t high enough compared to the number of the vehicles out there with a sunshade (some may not be reporting it honestly). I may be one of the few people out there that didn’t actually want a moonroof so mine rarely actually gets used…wel honestly other than occasionally opening the sunshade the actual moonroof has never been opened other than once to see how it worked (and was automatically close). Sadly it’s unlikely Nissan will ever do anything about it if the numbers aren’t high enough to definitively show it’s a defect in their eyes. Other than using a 3rd party repair facility and hopefully being able to get a repair done cheaper than through Nissan it seems like people with the issue are stuck with it and that’s unfortunate

I have this issue with my 2018 Platinum AWD Murano. We had it at the dealership today for a recall and they quoted us $2800 to fix the moonroof cover! That's insane, especially for something that's a design flaw. I got in the car one day and it was hanging down. I never even use the moonroof. I will NEVER buy another Nissan again.

I seldom sympathize with rants that end "I'll never buy another XYZ again" when someone has a frustrating experience with some part or service. It's an emotional over-reaction.

Interesting that an interior panel is called a "cover". I'd have thought that would be an exterior part, but no biggie. Many interior ceiling panels are secured by adhesive, and that adhesive can fail. But whether it's secured by adhesive or fasteners, it can be repaired. Dealers often don't "repair" stuff, they usually replace stuff.

My suggestion: go to a body shop, not a dealer. A good body shop deals with this stuff all the time. Dealers are always the most expensive option, so don't go there unless the work needed is dealer-specific.

If I understand correctly, the poster is referring to the cover that shades the moonroof, the topic of this thread...

It's not a panel, how would there be enough room for panoramic moonroof size 'panel' slide back to expose the moonroof? It's a thin cover that retracts to expose the moonroof.

It sounds like some of the problems are dealership based, and some are just frustration. To be fair, replacing a headrest or seat belt is normal warranty stuff on a car, but it sounds like it's not handled well there.

You should be able to buy a different warranty if you wish, although my experience is that once a vehicle is a few years old you're normally better off maintaining the vehicle well and just paying for repairs as needed. Again, taking maintenance and repair to an independent shop instead of the dealer is a goodtactic that usually saves you a lot of money.

Have you contacted a body shop for the problem sunroof? I think you'll get some better answers there.

I don't expect things to need to be replaced right after buying a new car (It was delivered defective. The driver side headrest wouldn't go down and you couldn't use the passenger side seat belt without it locking on you. There's still an issue with the heated seat on that side. It gets wicked hot, much hotter than the driver's side, but they said they couldn't find anything wrong with it. 🤷🏼‍♀️), but two out of the 3 brand new cars I've purchased had issues right off the bat. I guess I just have bad luck. 🤷🏼‍♀️ The first was a Hyundai and there was an issue with the blinker so we took it in and it turned out there was an issue with the airbag and they told us it could have deployed at any time because of whatever the issue was. Yikes. Thankfully that didn't happen.

We don't have any body shops near us, so it'll take some research. The closest one I could find on Google must have closed because my husband couldn't find them on the way home from the dealership and their phone number is now someone else's. We live in a rural area. The original dealership was 1.5 hours away and the one we go to now is about 2 hours away. Hopefully I'll be able to find someone in the city that can fix it for a lot less than $2800 because that's just ridiculous.

I never open my sunroof/moonroof, and always keep the shade ajar about 2" to allow air to circulate to hopefully prevent the gliue that's holidng the shade on from getting hot and delaminating. What I hate is, when driving with the windows down, that shade is bouncing and vibrating all over the place. My concern is that it's that constant, semi-violent motion that's going to cause the shade material to let go. Incidentally, the shade vibrates no matter if it's fully closed or slightly opened. Lots of wind turbulence with the windows down.

Yes, there is a lot of turbulence with the windows down. I would consider opening the shade fully (retracting it) when you're driving with the windows down. All that fluttering is likely to weaken the shade I would think...

Unfortunately cars aren't designed to be driven with windows open. For gas mileage purposes, they're designed and tested with windows up; driving with open windows causes wind "buffeting" inside. The manufacturer assumes your AC is working and in use.

Usually the answer is to open either multiple windows or none.

My shade made a strange noise last summer while closing. I looked up it was partially hanging loose on the passenger side. I remembered seeing all these posts and said “oh no you don’t!” (yes I talk to my car). I used my fingers and an old credit card to push the edge of the shade back into the track. I opened and closed it a few times and it went back to normal. In my case the actual leading edge that travels in the track was still fine, just the shade itself was coming out on the side. Not a complicated fix if you catch it in time.

This has happened to my 2015 too. We have had excessive heat these few weeks of 95 and above. One day I got in to go somewhere and opened all the windows to let the heat out. I left home with the windows down for just about 3 minutes at 35 mph. Then the next day I noticed one side of the liner was sagging and then it just degraded from there. I assume the sun heated the glued liner edges that keep it in the track, and the wind coming in the car helped it fail. I’ve looked at a couple of options but probably will take me girl in to have the dealer replace it even at the high cost. I plan on riding with her for another 100k and shes doing great otherwise.
