The Window Rattle

Okay, I've dealt with this problem ever since I took ownership. I figured it might go away as the vehicle 'settled' and all the materials weathered, but noooo...

My driver and passenger windows (and very rarely the rear pass/driver) rattle. Or, more accurately, something is rattling against them and it resonates across the entire window surface. This sounds like a tapping or a creaking (but with a more rapid report, like a *tap!*) and happens in two situations:

Driver's side will tap when hitting a bump on the passenger side. Usually these are creases between sections of paved road. Sudden, quick, snappy bumps.

Passenger side will tap when hitting a similar bump on the driver side.

Both sides will tap if whatever causes the bump hits both sides of the car.

Also, occasionally tapping when the vehicle's weight shifts, like going around curves.

These only happen when the windows are fully up. These also happen MUCH more frequently if it is cold outside, often to the point where -any- bump will result in tap-tap-tap.

Given the topics on "the other Murano forum", people have had a variety of solutions for this. A variety of problems, I imagine. One dude took his door apart and tweaked something where the window rests. Frankly, I don't know what to do.

My MO is going in for 7500 service soon, and I will mention it to the techs. Again. The first time, they heard it on my initial drive, but then couldn't reproduce it (that old line) on subsequent test drives. They must've driven it around their nicely paved, smooth parking lot, because on any normal road, it'll do it. Often.

Mrf. :/

I tried a piece of paper wedged in like the photos and the rattles mostly stopped. Still, I thought it should be fixed "right" so I took it into my dealer. I told the service guy about the fixes on this site. When I went to pick it up he said he couldn't find any rattle. As a drove from the lot, both windows were rattling. I went home and shoved some double sided foam tape where I had the paper and no rattles. I guess I should have just done what you guys did in the first place to get it fixed "right"!

The rubber lining tube on the chassis (not on the door) on the driver side where the door seals, is sticky inside the tube. When you quickly press the ruuber lining tube and release near the right side (in front of the driver seat headrest), you will hear a ticking noise or more accurately it sounds like you are pealing a velcro out or a partially glued plastic. This is exactly the noise I get when the door presses against the rubber lining tube on rough roads.

Showing this little demo to the dealer may help him understand the problem.

Also the rubber lining tube has small holes every few feet. How about dropping some lubricant like say engine oil or some other non-edible oil through those holes so the oil atleast flows through the rubber lining inside and will make the inside of the tube non-sticky.

Just a wild guess, though my instinct says it may work, I am not sure. I will probably give it a try myself and see if it works, before I go to the dealer.

Looks like the TSB is official:

http://www.nissan-techinfo.com/nissan/TSB/Nissan/54413.asp?mscssid=

They seem to offer an one day access for $19.95 to download the TSB. I also saw a fax copy of it in this forum.

If none of the method discussed works, I will probably download a copy of the TSB from their website and take it to the dealer. If I am not able to convince the dealer, I will probably order the replacement parts suggested and replace the stupid rubber lining myself if they are not expensive, assuming it won't affect the warranty on the vehicle.

Hi murano123,

As mentioned many times in this thread... these TSB's do not help the ticking and clicking, thus the reason most of us are still working on the problem.

I also tested the "rubber lining tube" and found that although I can create the sound you mention... it most definitely was not the "ticking and clicking" sound I hear when the doors are shut.

In my experience, the only fix is to stop the door panel from rubbing on the painted metal door frame. I also feel that if you were to try the "weather stripping material" you mention, you may have to double it up as with my experience the thicker the material, the more successful you will be in stopping the noise.

Hello,

The "paper trick" does use a thick piece of paper. When I first discovered it, I used a rolled up business card which would have been about 1/4 inch thick. Like most people by now, I've used something a little more concealing (black felt weather stripping).

I've again attached my original picture using the business card.

We did not pay $30000 plus on this vehicle to go through all this. My $1500 worth Saturn SL1 does not rattle with 80k miles on it, why do we have to insert business cards into window moldings and still pay a huge car loan every month. We have to do something about this and raise our voices against Nissan. How about all of us sending a fax to Nissan US division at the same time to issue a recall on whatever piece of junk they built around the doors that cause these noises.

All these dealer bums won't listen unless there is an official recall from Nissan.

Just stick a carpet circle in the door and you won't have to fax anyone, you want have to talk to an idiot at the dealership, and you won't have a ticking sound anymore.

I dropped off my Durango one time for a tranny noise I was having. They couldn't duplicate the sound. So, the service manager tells me "Billy Bob over there lives in King George - I'll have him drive it home tonight." King George is about 15 miles away.

Two days later, they call and tell me "we can't find the noise, come on down and pick it up."

I get down there and the odometer is the same as when I left it. So much for Billy Bob taking it home.

Trust me - the dealer is not a problem solver in the noise deptartment. You're wasting your time if you drop it off and ask them to find a noise.

Newjack,

It does work. I tried your business card trick. I will test again at night when the temp drops below 60. I will also try dropping a bead of adhesive caulk in that area and see if it is a good alternative for a business card.

BTW, I didn't use my business card, I use my salesperson's business card. Atleast it served one purpose. :2:

The car does feel terrific without these rattles.

Thanks a lot folks.

>>I will test again at night when the temp drops below 60.<<

Wow! I wish I had that problem

It's supposed to be 12 here tonight (Virginia) and it's been snowing all day. I have been installing Vance and Hines BigShots (exhaust) on my bike all day, but at the rate this weather is going, I won't be able to test it until April when we hit decent weather. Oh well, they look nice, anyhow.

Glad the rattle stopped. - Jim

I tried not to hear the rattles……..however, even though they are intermittent and not very pronounced they do drive me crazy. Recently I look more closely how the car is made (unfortunately I subconsciously compare it to FX and…….but that another story) and discovered that:
- the A-pillar cover is loose at the bottom (though does not rattle yet)
- the door lining is simply loose. Even slightly depressed is moves and rattles.

I have been thinking about taking off the door lining and trying to apply some dampening materials with a hope that it would solve problems.

Anyone out there who did it? Any word of advice how to take the lining off (4,500 pages of service manual do not address this small issue)? What materials to use?

Thanks

My MO has been in the shop 7 times for the window rattle....I give the dealer credit...They are trying....It has been a pain in the a@$ to take it in, but they are giving me a free rental car each time...They said they might order all new guts for both front doors..IE Windows, Tracks, Door Panel...etc....

Well I go to the dealer at 5 PM today...They promosied to have my MO ready....Needless to say it was still in pieces. They claim to have the window rattles taken care of for good...We will see...But I also had a noise behind the glovebox....It kind of worries me since the reason my MO wasn't ready is they couldn't get the dash back together. They were having issues getting the ECM back in the dash...so I am cruising around in a Nissan Sentra....I am SO PISSED....It has been in the shop 7 times. Luckily my father is an attorney so he will be sending a nice letter to Nissan on Monday...Nissan has been on contact with me weekly with the issues I am having and said they want to do something for me once it is fixed. They wanted me to give them suggesstions of what they could do...What should I ask for? I was thinking chrome wheels...maybe the service plus plan....to get oil change and rotations...What do you think??

hm.........
1. fix the rattles.....and I mean FIX
2. fix the rattles
3. fix the rattles

now we can think what we can get............

Kind of scary when factory trained mechanics cannot put things back together................

PS. Let me know how did you go and what the Nissan did. I will be taking mine shortly and this information would help.......

#248 ·
I sure will...As soon as it is FIXED....I will post exactly what they did.....They said they will even order all new door panels...The dealer is doing everything they can...It is just a pain to take it in...

I purchased my vehicle from Mcminn Nissan, but am having all the service done at Wright's....They are a great group of people there....I just feel bad taking it in time after time....
