The Window Rattle

Okay, I've dealt with this problem ever since I took ownership. I figured it might go away as the vehicle 'settled' and all the materials weathered, but noooo...

My driver and passenger windows (and very rarely the rear pass/driver) rattle. Or, more accurately, something is rattling against them and it resonates across the entire window surface. This sounds like a tapping or a creaking (but with a more rapid report, like a *tap!*) and happens in two situations:

Driver's side will tap when hitting a bump on the passenger side. Usually these are creases between sections of paved road. Sudden, quick, snappy bumps.

Passenger side will tap when hitting a similar bump on the driver side.

Both sides will tap if whatever causes the bump hits both sides of the car.

Also, occasionally tapping when the vehicle's weight shifts, like going around curves.

These only happen when the windows are fully up. These also happen MUCH more frequently if it is cold outside, often to the point where -any- bump will result in tap-tap-tap.

Given the topics on "the other Murano forum", people have had a variety of solutions for this. A variety of problems, I imagine. One dude took his door apart and tweaked something where the window rests. Frankly, I don't know what to do.

My MO is going in for 7500 service soon, and I will mention it to the techs. Again. The first time, they heard it on my initial drive, but then couldn't reproduce it (that old line) on subsequent test drives. They must've driven it around their nicely paved, smooth parking lot, because on any normal road, it'll do it. Often.

Mrf. :/

HAHA...Maybe...when I went to pick up my MO last night all sorts of things were hanging inside of it...Some huge white box, that is part of the cooling system was on the floor beside....They were trying to get that back in so they could get the ECM installed...NO luck....Hey..At least my car will be in garage during this cold weather....

Well I picked up my MO today and all seems to be OK with the windows..."knock on wood" Time will only tell...Nissan Consumer Affairs called me today and offered me an "exclusive" Nissan Keychain for all my aggrevation...I laughed....I had my vehicle at the dealer 7 times....I am going to have my attorney send them a letter asking for oil changes and tire rotations for several years....It is the least they can do..

Should you change the name or it is still m-to-be?
Still "to be", unfortunately. :(

Came really close earlier this year but now I want to wait until winter, salt and snow are over. It's been a rough winter here in Pittsburgh.

I must admit that some of the 'trouble' posts have also worried me a bit, so now I don't mind the delay and wait. Gives me some extra time to monitor the issues.

I'm glad to hear the folks at Wright Nissan are great, I live close to their dealership and would love to give them the business.

I think that we are "overdoing" the small problems with rattles etc. Yes, I am cmplaining a little but I still love the MO...............it is amazing how smooth this car is........it does not handles as well as the FX though I prefer MO for longer hauls........

As to the winter - I was in Pittsburgh 2 weeks ago - terrible traffic and really bad weather. 7 miles drive took us 2 hrs........hope this week will be better...........next week Toronto, jaak country.........

Wish you "perfect MO" soon!;)

Ok the famous WINDOW RATTLE………….

It did get worse recently, maybe because of the weather. I noticed that around 50 F it was worst. Last two days I drove with my elbow on the door handle just not to hear it. I did not have time to go the dealer and go through all this saga described by others.

So encouraged by dookie (thanks!) who described how to disassemble door panel I did something today. First I took off the door panel and have a close look inside. My suspicions were that the rattle was “produced” by the top part of the panel moving over the top edge of the inner door. So I put 2/3 “ window sealing tape on the top of the edge and in “strategic” locations, in several places on the inner door. Put everything together…….drove several miles over bad road surface and…………….:) the rattle is GONE. I hope for good. If it comes back at least I will know what to do. It took me 20 min per door. Not bad investment!
:D

Good pic. I did the same exact thing as you. At first I didn't put foam on the top edge and foamed everything alse, including wires that might have been rattling against the door. Put it all back together, and there was still a rattle. I took it apart again, and foamed over the top metal part, and now it sounds solid over big and small bumps. Like you said, hopefully it lasts.

kris....

good work!!

the panel isnt that bad to remove is it??

just remember...... by removing the panel (only) and replacing it, you stop the rattle, temporarily (in my case at least).... after about 1-2 days it returned for me......

i hope you net a better result with yours....!

esemes,

thanks! Yes, it wasn't really hard to take the panels off.............

as to the results - common, let's me enjoy the rattle free MO, even if it is just 2 days;)

I did have a closer look at how the panel is mounted and I believe that the rattle is caused by the top part of the panel. If it comes back I have plan B:D

I have the same problem. I can fix it if I roll the window ever so slightly and then roll it back up. If you roll down too far it will not work.
Never happens when window is down at all though does it?

Hope this helps. A pain in the a*$ but better than listening to that nerve racking noise.

:)

You guys are doing Nissan's design work. You should get fat checks from them for what you discovered and fixed. :2:
What can I say: "in my/yours dream!" :D

PS. Since the last post I took the panels off once more time and made some changes to the "solution". I used irrigation hose, 1/4 inch diameter, cut alond and put on th etop of the inner door edge. I have also used weather seal along the top edge and in strategic locations. The rattle is gone. However, I still do get the "thick", but only when I go over big bumps etc.

I prefer to do it myself then go the the dealer. More cost effective from pure time point of view.

will try over the weekend

I think it would work as well..............I got mine from Home Depot...........I wasn't even looking for it.....I was looking for something I could place in the inner door edge. When I saw the tube I thought It would work. And it did....

It's good to see this thread hasn't died. ;)

BAD to see the problem hasn't entirely gone away.

Mine still occasionally taps, but only over certain bumps. The weather has been really weird, so I'm sure all sorts of materials are expanding and contracting.

I'm more concerned with my A Pillar rattle now. It is louder and more constant until the vehicle significantly warms up. It's on the passenger side only now, but I'm sure it will come to the driver's side too.

I do not have problems with the A pillar yet. however, I did notice that the cover is really loose..........my next project is to deal with it..........unfortunately I haven't worked out how to take the plastic cover off..........

Anyone out there who knows how to do it?

Re: Window Rattle

The answer to the rattle (in most cases) is in ths thread. Just read through it. It Involves insolating the door panel from the metal portion of the door.

New to this site, so please be patient. My Murano is three months old and I have the exact problem as yours with the windows rattle. Your description is what I've tried to tell the dealership but couldn't put into words. Any solutions?

Window area pop and tick noise

I so glad I found this site and thread! I’ve been living with the pop/tick for 8 months and it’s been driving be crazy! I’ve taken my Murano in two times to different dealers and nothing was done to fix it. I was beginning to think it was me being to picky about the minor problem I’ve been having with my veichcle. Now I know I’m not alone! I’m just pissed that I had to find the TSB on the problem myself and was I getting the run around from the dealers. I also found a TSB on my rocking driver’s seat that no one seemed to find when I asked to have it repaired.

I tried the thick paper trick today and it works great! I have an appointment on Tuesday to have the problem fixed, so I don’t have to have a business card in the door.! Well, maybe that was a hidden feature I did not know about in my Murano, the built-in business card holder! I will bring in the TSB with me on Tuesday. I just hope I don’t get the run around again on the pop/tick noise.

I am also having a rattle coming from the dash area. Anyone else has this and know where it might be coming from. Thanks!!

I feel your pain. I had my MO at the shop 12 time for the window rattle and dash noises. Knock on wood I think it is all fixed. The noise under the dash on my MO was caused by two different things. First one being the air handler box behind the dash was not assembled correctly and the plastic was rubbing. They took it out and put form inbetween the two pieces. The other noise was caused by a loose cable for the emergency brake. My dealer has had several MO's that had the loose cable and it causes a very annoying noise....Hope this helps some....

Thanks to everyone on this site for excellent suggestions. I tried the paper wedge and it worked great. I have had no pops, ticks since i put the paper in. Going to put in some felt instead of the paper. Kind of sad that we all bought a $30,000+ car and have to put paper in the door to keep it from making noise.
