The Window Rattle

Okay, I've dealt with this problem ever since I took ownership. I figured it might go away as the vehicle 'settled' and all the materials weathered, but noooo...

My driver and passenger windows (and very rarely the rear pass/driver) rattle. Or, more accurately, something is rattling against them and it resonates across the entire window surface. This sounds like a tapping or a creaking (but with a more rapid report, like a *tap!*) and happens in two situations:

Driver's side will tap when hitting a bump on the passenger side. Usually these are creases between sections of paved road. Sudden, quick, snappy bumps.

Passenger side will tap when hitting a similar bump on the driver side.

Both sides will tap if whatever causes the bump hits both sides of the car.

Also, occasionally tapping when the vehicle's weight shifts, like going around curves.

These only happen when the windows are fully up. These also happen MUCH more frequently if it is cold outside, often to the point where -any- bump will result in tap-tap-tap.

Given the topics on "the other Murano forum", people have had a variety of solutions for this. A variety of problems, I imagine. One dude took his door apart and tweaked something where the window rests. Frankly, I don't know what to do.

My MO is going in for 7500 service soon, and I will mention it to the techs. Again. The first time, they heard it on my initial drive, but then couldn't reproduce it (that old line) on subsequent test drives. They must've driven it around their nicely paved, smooth parking lot, because on any normal road, it'll do it. Often.

Mrf. :/

Kind of sad that we all bought a $30,000+ car and have to put paper in the door to keep it from making noise.
I would say it is an nunderstatement.................

Boy, am I glad I found this thread! I've had my MO for one day (love it), and while driving through the cold, mountainous terrain of SW Montana, my driver's side door/window rattled like it was full of plastic forks. I'll give the paper wedge a try and hope for the best, thanks!

door panel orange button in the bottom

OK
I've decided to pull apart the driver side door panel to target this unyielding sounds. I almost broke apart of this door panel, done some foaming, weather stripping and try to close this panel where I came to a problem.

If anyone have opened the panel, one would notice kind of orange hook in the bottom of the panel. Now question is how I would allign and rehook this orange buttons as well as the upper window side?
I tried everyway but no luck.

I have done it at least 2 times. First pull the orange "hooks" out of the door structureand put them into the door panel. Align and "slide" the door panel down so it seat properly on the toop edge. Now push the panel starting from top. You will hear "cliks" when the latches locks. By that time the orange latches should align themselve.

Hope it helps.

PS. Are the rattles gone?

The rattles continue...

It's getting warmer out here in Jersey and the rattles are coming back despite the paper trick from newjack. :( The theory behind the paper trick may still be sound, however... it DID work for a few months there, after all.

At least the causes of the rattle haven't changed!

TSB 03109

Is anyone familiar with the latest TSB 03109 associated with the window/door panel ticking noise? I am aware of 03090 and 03105 which focus mostly on the tick in the window, but this focuses on the door panel. Has anyone had it done? I have had my MO in about 6 times to fix the ticking noise and they still cannot solve the problem. They've lubricated the window guides, replaced the rubber mouldings all 4 windows, replaced the regulator, added foam to the inside of the door panel.

I've personally tried the business card trick, but it only lasted 1-2 weeks before the sounds came back. I am so frustrated with this car.

It doesn't just pull off. There are a lot of screws, and electrical boxes to remove in the process. Best thing is the shop manual page.
This is for the door panel! Somewhere after I stopped reading, the thread changed to the a pillar. That plastic does just pull off. Slide your fingers behind the top edge and pull.

Hit it with a big stick

With the end of the cold weather the felt pad on the top rear corner ceased to stop the click so as I had the panel off anyway to install new door speakers I decided it was time for a fix. I had some left over Krona insulation from the wrap they did on my house

http://www.krona.ca

Quick bit of trimming with a pair of sissors to fit the entire door panel folded a 1/2" over the top lip of the metal door panel and put the door panel back on no squeaks no rattles and no clicks..Might even make the mo a bit warmed in the winter.

Upgrade to the tweeters was well worth doing door speakers improved the sound bit more but did not make as radical an improvement.

For anyone trying to remove the tweeter grills pull the side vent panels off first it makes it much easier just pull them straight back thay come off suprisingly easy.

I've had my Mo for one month now with 500 miles, the Window rattle is now driving me crazy. I live in Florida and with the mention of the "end of the cold weather the felt pad ceased to stop the click" I am now really concerned after reading 20 pages of this post. I thought the solution had been found. Have any of the Florida members tried the fix and found it to be successful. Thanks for any response.

Just an FYI for those fixing their own rattles. I went down to the deal the other day to buy some replacement plastic snap locks (I dunno what the real name for them is) for the door panel. The new one I bought have a felt pad around the part that contacts the door. I am guessing that Nissan may have found part of the reason for the rattles in the door. Anyway I think they were 60 cents each and I am probably now going to replace them all to see if it helps.

The plastic snaps that hold the door panel to the metal portion of the door right?

We have had our MO since November and the window tick has been part of the car since day two. Both the driver and passenger side tick. I tried the wedge trick and it only seemed to work for a day or two. It is much worse when it is cold. I had the MO in for its first free oil change a couple months ago and mentioned it (ticks) to the service manager. He gave me a Nissan noise worksheet to fill out and told me to make an appointment to have it looked at. Of course I waited and last Sunday at the end of a long drive the "check engine soon" light came on. Also one of the seat heater buttons had pushed into the console. I called them up Monday morning and explained what was going on. They told me to have the car in at 8 am Tuesday. After a 3.5 hour wait the service manager came to get me. The "check engine soon" light was caused by the EMS (exhast management system?). No problem. The button for the seat heaters was an easy fix. Last item would be the window ticks. I figured I would get what seems to be SOP for Nissan dealers, "sorry, we didn't hear a tick". Suprise, suprise. He said there definately were ticks coming from both windows. The tech felt the best action would be to replace the rails in both windows. The parts were ordered and should be in this Monday. Who knows if it will fix anything, but I was more than pleased that they acknowledged the problem and are trying to fix it. As soon as it goes back in I'll post the verdict. Also they still have all the paper work on the repairs until the window rails get replaced. Once I get them I'll post any info off the invoices. Jeff

Best of luck....

I have not had any ticks with my MO however a last week I was getting rattles from the drivers door side area. When the car is stationary I can reproduce the noice by pressing on the top of the door itself. I'm thinking that the TSB to replace the window guides might actaully solve this issue.

I have an appointment on Monday I'll see what they find. I'm also having them replace the sun visor clips as the passenger side doesn't hold the visor securely and the TSB pretty much covers that issue without question.

I was thrown back by the service center I use was the person who wrote up the order said "didn't I already yell at you for getting a model the first year out"....... Nice to hear that from a Nissan Service Center..... really nice. Nissan should really give their service center a course in basic customer relations. I couldn't believe that. :3:

Krona does the trick as mentioned above my big stick fix for the window rattle seems to be a lasting fix for those of you with the tick try this press your finger on teh door panel just about half way between the arm rest and the top of the door . On mine slight pressure here would produce the tick I believe it is a combination of the plastic frame that makes up the door panel and the hunks of foam they use to fill the relief areas being poorly bonded. The Krona insulation I used just tightens everything up nicely.

As a note you can buy extra tough nylon panel snaps which hold better than the factory snaps.
