The Window Rattle

Okay, I've dealt with this problem ever since I took ownership. I figured it might go away as the vehicle 'settled' and all the materials weathered, but noooo...

My driver and passenger windows (and very rarely the rear pass/driver) rattle. Or, more accurately, something is rattling against them and it resonates across the entire window surface. This sounds like a tapping or a creaking (but with a more rapid report, like a *tap!*) and happens in two situations:

Driver's side will tap when hitting a bump on the passenger side. Usually these are creases between sections of paved road. Sudden, quick, snappy bumps.

Passenger side will tap when hitting a similar bump on the driver side.

Both sides will tap if whatever causes the bump hits both sides of the car.

Also, occasionally tapping when the vehicle's weight shifts, like going around curves.

These only happen when the windows are fully up. These also happen MUCH more frequently if it is cold outside, often to the point where -any- bump will result in tap-tap-tap.

Given the topics on "the other Murano forum", people have had a variety of solutions for this. A variety of problems, I imagine. One dude took his door apart and tweaked something where the window rests. Frankly, I don't know what to do.

My MO is going in for 7500 service soon, and I will mention it to the techs. Again. The first time, they heard it on my initial drive, but then couldn't reproduce it (that old line) on subsequent test drives. They must've driven it around their nicely paved, smooth parking lot, because on any normal road, it'll do it. Often.

Hi esemes,

nice to see you are still with us..................

I have some popping noises and rattles though not very serious. At least not serious enough to go to the dealer. Anyway with all the info on this board I just might do something about it....

Thanks. .just keep posting;)

Dmako here

As far as the post about fixing the poping inthe B pillar.

A while ago I posted my problem and someone posted the fix I re-posted here. Now I only visit FA, edmunds, and here for Mo related info. so the original post may still be around.

I have not tried it yet.

I start and am afraid of breaking some plastic clip on the pillar.

To remove you take off the floor kick plate then the bottom B pillar comes off I think there are about 3 clips.

Then the upper B pillar more involved due to seat belt, etc.

There should be some good pic of removing the bottom B pillar by anyone who has installed a sat.

Have to run but I'll try to find out more on the orig. poster.

pulling the doorskin is one thing, but, if you're gonna remove the tensioner finishers (and/or garnish) you need to be VERY careful!!!

Since there are curtain airbags up there....

Before servicing the SRS, turn ignition switch OFF, disconnect both battery cables and wait at least 3 minutes.
For approximately 3 minutes after the cables are removed, it is still possible for the air bag and seat belt
pre-tensioner to deploy. Therefore, do not work on any SRS connectors or wires until at least 3 minutes
have passed........
always do this when working around the bags!

Tried newjacks idea with the paper and low and behold the ticking noise has stopped so far. Going in for oil change at the dealers tomorrow and I'm going to see if we can come up with some kind of rubber edging to run along the whole door panel side
I used a 1" wide strip of carpeting, adhered to the door (metal) itself.....

I replaced the paper I originally used with a 1" long black weather stripping (to match my paint). The stripping is fairly thick 1/2" or so, but compresses under the weight of the door panel. I finished it off by cutting the excess amount... and so far 1 week of no ticking or clicking. I have my fingers cross that this might be the "ticking" fix.

I used a piece of pickup truck camper foam padding doubled up and placed it in a bout 4 different spots down the length of the door and also cut off the excess. It seems to have fixed it.
I don't remember who used the piece of paper orginally but great find! Now almost feels (and sounds) as solid a my girlfriends mercedes.

Update: The latest TSB does not solve the problem. The tap is still there.

Next, I'll try the latest tweak with the door plastic from newjack...

Is this still enough of a test to make sure the solution solves the rattles? I'm gonna give it a go, and if it works, I'll try to find something for a permanent solution.

Works on mine too.. Now the question is does it stop the trim hitting the door edge or does it just tension up the door panel and stop a noise elsewhere that may come back when time reduces the preload?

Now the bottom of the passenger side A pilar is making a bunch of noise on bumps when it is cold, any quick cures for that?

went to dealer for oil change and showed him newjacks paper cure. He said that he will pass it along to the nissan rep and see if they come up with a permanent fix. If not he said he will work with me to find something. He also drives a Rano. He is going to order new side panels if he has to. He is now also reading this site to try and keep up with known problems. If this is the problem and all the dealers let their reps know I am sure they will come up with a fix.

Awesome! Good to see that we are finding solutions! I took my MO in for the first oil change and had them do a TSB on the window rattle. He 'tightened loose bolts' and the noise went away for a day. Next morning: more rattles. Now they seem to be angry because I tried to stop them before! I'm going to try the paper fix tomorrow. My passenger door is making a similar noise. Both fingers crossed.

The A Pillar Rattle!

I have that one too. On REALLY cold mornings. Most noticeable when going over very rough pavement or gravel. I pushed in on my A pillar cover this afternoon... it had some give, so I will see if things are tighter tomorrow.

The Window Rattle!

Good to hear that someone has enough of a connection with their dealer to pass along a 'solution' to the Window Rattle... I wish my dealership was THAT friendly!

Update: I tried the paper trick with a napkin... not nearly as sturdy, but it was the quickest thing I could grab. It works VERY well and eliminated most if not all my rattles. I will test on the way home with an actual wedge of paper.

And yes, the rattles are temperature sensitive. REALLY FREEZING cold mornings will result in less rattles until the vehicle warms up some. REALLY HOT days also have less rattles. The most rattling occurs around 45-50 degrees F, I've noticed.

kinda funny, i know.. but in the winter, like right now, my rattles are all gone!!! but in the summer they drove me nuts..

i think its the temperature .. expanding/compressing rule.. you know...

but i dont want to not turn the cold a/c in the summer so i need to fix the rattles too! dont get me wrong..

O SILENT MO

Day One:

The rattles are not a'sounding!

The paper trick works! It is warm enough this afternoon to definitely get the rattles going, and I subjected my (poor) MO to some particularly nasty bumps (which I normally avoid) in hopes of getting the rattle... well, I wasn't hoping, but I was trying to reproduce... and no rattles!

:2:

Obviously a more permanent solution is in order, but this is the best, biggest step in the right direction that we've had so far! Newjack, can you show us pictures of your weatherstripping solution?

Note: Your smileage may vary. This may or may not fix YOUR rattle problem. If not, try referencing Nissan TSBs for other rattle-fixing procedures.

Day Two:

I tried a rectangle of felt (two sticky-back pieces put together) in place of the paper. It didn't work nearly as well as the paper. The felt was more pliable and I don't think it fit in the crease as well as the paper did (which was more 'firm'). So, a felt replacement is out.. at least for me.

I put another piece of paper back and it worked almost as well as the first piece. Rattles were only noticeable when cornering (which causes the vehicle to lean). But general bumps and rough pavement did not cause rattles.

I'd say that in my normal journeys, I could get a rattle or two every minute of my trek. That's 50 or so rattles a trip (two trips a day), depending on temperature. Now, I could count the rattles on one hand. So this is definitely an improvement.

What do I think is causing this problem? The rubbery trim on the door. No, not on the door itself, but on the vehicle where the door closes. If you press against this rubber lining, it will tap/pop softly. The paper trick causes a bit of the door to press more tightly against this seal, to stop the pop. I think.

Day Three:

Haven't driven the Murano in a while. I guess that was the MO's Christmas gift: some R&R in the driveway. Sometime in January I'm going to have her detailed inside and out (by a super pro shop, so no goofs) too. :)

The Murano is still very quiet. Newjack deserves major props for his solution! There's another problem, though: the A Pillar Rattle. I've made a new thread about it, so hopefully we can solve this one as well!

Day Four:

Heard a bit more of the rattle today. I think my piece of paper is wearing out and isn't nearly as thick as it should be (it is about half the thickness of the paper in newjack's example). Definitely need to move to a better solution soon, but for now will stick with the paper.

I just did the same trick w/slip-resistant foam circles for under chair legs, etc. It worked perfectly! also they are small black circles, so unless you were looking you wouldn't even see them. It is plenty cold here so it was a good test, I was about ready to drive the winter w/my windows down to kill the ticking!!! THANK YOU :2:

Pics of your solutions would be greatly appreciated... I'd like to see how you've taken this solution and made it a reality (and one that looks appropriate). I can't keep paper in there forever! ;)

If I ever build my Murano website, it's going to be dedicated to newjack ;)
