Warning light issue

Hi all, having some trouble with my 2005 murano and thought I'd see if anyone can offer any advice.

Last week I noticed what looked like oil on my drive, checked oil level and it was within the lines however, on Friday when I drove away in the morning the engine sounded rattly and rough and the car went into limp mode so I pulled over straight away. The malfunction indicator light and ESP light came on also.

I added some oil as my first thought was that it was too low or empty and started it up again and it seemed ok. ESP light went off but MIL stayed on. Drove it to work easy and was ok, however when I came out after work had to top up oil again as the noise came back.

Yesterday I did n oil and filter change but there is no sign of a leak but the MIL light is stil on.

I know it's a bit vague but if anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it.

Car is LPG converted but pretty certain it is nothing to do with that

What is "MIL"? No idea here.

Did you add oil without checking the level? Why?

I think it will help to be a bit more methodical, check everything, check oil before adding any, and document the process. If you saw oil on the driveway, you may have had the pan plug inserted incorrectly or loose. Hopefully that is no longer the case after the oil change.

At present, you have no idea what the problem is or whether it involved oil level - because it seems you haven't checked the level. Rattling could indeed be low oil, but it may not be.

I know that the best aid to diagnosing my own car problems is to slow down, be methodical and thorough in noting the symptoms, and that helps me use logic to determine the problem.

It would help to clean off the underside of the engine at a car wash and start looking for leaks; if there was oil on the driveway, the underside of the engine surely has oil on it that you should clean off before trying to find leaks.

Hi guys, thanks for your replies.

I had checked the oil a couple of days before and it was at the low end of the dip stick so i know that a little oil wouldnt do any harm. The engine was warm so i couldn't get a reading at the time.

Anyway, i have some further developments......

Took the car into a local garage to check it out and after diagnostics they said it was a can bus error saying that some of the ECU's were not talking to each other correctly but after a reset it seemed fine, took car out for a drive and said it was a very smooth drive (think he quite liked the car actually :)

However, the next day the sound came back, not quite as loud as before but still there and after taking it out last night i suspect that it coudl be something to do with the steering as the noise seems to be linked to steering wheel movement (whirring type noise when you turn the wheel). AFT fluid is within levels (albeit close to the minimum) but i'm guessing that that there is more to it that fluid levels as there is some in it. The noise did go away completely thought after around a mile or 2 of driving. Called local Nissan dealership and the answer was 'we do not stock brake fluid and would have to order it in and would be the middle of next week' - seems a bit odd to me that they do not stock fluid for their own cars?

No sign of leaks under the car at all so it is going back into garage tomorrow for another look. I'm not as 'technically minded' as i would like to be so i'l see how i get on at garage and keep you posted.

CVT fluid did cross my mind as i remember reading a lot about it before buying car, read some horror stories at the time so hoping its nothing to do with that. Not sure what to look out or but will mention to garage.

There are multiple things going on here...

1) "... some of the ECU's were not talking to each other correctly..." does not make sense. There is only one ECU (engine control unit) in the vehicle. If this is not true, please someone, enlighten me!

2) "No brake fluid" is ridiculous. Standard brake fluid is a commodity, 100% compatible with the system and can be bought at any parts store. Maybe they ran out Nissan-branded brake fluid (a major screw-up of their parts department), but if a dealer refused to top off my brake fluid (potentially jeopardizing my safety) because he was unwilling to use a non-Nissan commodity fluid, he'd never see me again. (See the owner's manual for type, I think it's DOT3). Yes, there are slightly different boiling points among brands of brake fluid, but that's not at issue in this application. http://www.afcoracing.com/tech_pages/fluid.shtml

3) Since the rattle goes away after a couple of miles, something is changing. It's not oil pressure because that comes up in seconds.

The question in my mind is - what changes state after a couple of miles of driving? Idler pulleys? Belts (which warm up)? I don't have an answer yet, just "thinking out loud."

I do think it was worth having a look at the ignition system, since the vehicle went into protect mode. "Rattling" can be an audible result of uneven ignition, but a scope should show this problem.

Update! had car at garage on Saturday and they have confirmed that it is the Power Steering High Pressure line that is leaking. After a quick google (and looking at the stickies on this forum) it seems to be a common issue with Murano's.

The garage is trying to source a new part (as am I) but they have told me it isn't a small job to do so not sure of the price yet. they say it is leaking at the sensor (middle of hose) and were looking into just replacing the sensor so they do not need to remove the full hose however from what i have read you can only replace the full thing.

Can anyone recommend a place to buy a new PS pressure line other than Nissan? all the ones i can find online are from the USA and coming in around £100 delivered (inc. tax) but obviously the delivery times are long. I'l see what Nissan say tomorrow but the last time i had to get a part from them (fuel pump) it took 2 weeks anyway.

There are a few guides on how to replace this yourself, that is an option but as i dont have a garage and it is winter i will see what the garage says.

thanks again for the feedback
