Wow! I didn't think this was that big a deal, but it looks like Nissan is stepping up to the plate without the pressure it took to get the alternator recall (which, IMHO, was a bigger issue). Here's a blurb from the official Nissan press release:

Nissan will be conducting a voluntary safety recall on approximately 226,000 Model Year 2003-2006 Murano vehicles to add a fuel tank shield in front of the fuel tank. Note: This issue was first raised as a preliminary investigation in September of 2005 – GOV05:190
Guess those guys with fuel tank punctures really weren't kidding!

Gonzo-

I don't get it. I thought the purpose of the recall was to protect the front surface of the tank from debris kicked up by the front tires. The rubber (?) pad is primarily on the underside of the tank. The front surface is still not protected.

I'm confused. :8:

Thanx for the pix. I especially liked the first one with the little guy looking in from the other side!

The metal shield looks a lot less obtrusive than the plastic box that is also being used as part of the recall.

All the photos (all posters - thanks for your contribution) convince me of one thing - a custom work is needed.....

At least the aluminum shield looks to be in the same vein as the angled design in a drawing one of our members here posted. I guess thats the one I hope to get when I get the recall done.

with the metal sheild it looks like they swapped out the gas tank for a massive muffler. we already have one of those hangin out under there. but i certainly looks much better then the black plastic, i'll try and get them to swap out my plastic one for the metal.

The metal shield looks to be far and away the better of the two options.

What if it was painted black? Then it should be even less noticable.

Plastic Shield

Just had my fuel shield installed last week. It does look ridiculous from underneath and not aerodynamic. I don't consider this something to worry about because it's not visible to the general public and really won't create much drag...that is, not much more than all the other under carriage parts of the frame, lines, and wheel that hanging down. I would rather have the thick plastic than aluminum. What’s up with the change to rubber? Better to bounce off the tank???
What I'm concerned about it is that it still doesn't fully protect the fuel tank and functions only like a wall. (In other words if you run over a bicycle or pile of road warrior debris, a bike pedal or forks would probably still puncture the tank. I have attached some SIDE/REAR images that were not included in some previous threads. Why don’t they cover the entire tank?

Just had mine (plastic) put on last week. No big deal... the average Joe 6-Pack isn't going to notice, care less.

You guys be careful with self-made NHTSA mods. I am sure if you were driving a self-modded Pinto in '74 and got rear-ended/blown up, Ford would have washed their hands of you.

If you really can't stand the black plastic one - an '06 alumimum one might work. Worth looking into if you're that concerned about what other's think of your bottom... The alumimum one, by the way, is going to look just as crappy as the plastic one in snow, ice, rain, dirt, etc.

Have fun! - Jim

SCARIER THAN BEING EATEN BY A SHARK

I'll have to agree with you. The FUEL TANK SHEILD sounds strong but doesn't look like it can handle road warriors like ourselves. However, it's better than nothing at all on the interim. At least until I can find some titanium or 1/2 steel to weld around that fuel tank. (KAAABOOM!).
They must have been thinking "let's save money and not go all out" on this recall eh? The tank is still exposed...just not as directly as before without some kind of shielding, however feeble it may be.
Like the Pinto, it may take a few astronomical lawsuits from exploding fuel tanks before they redesign the fuel tank area.

06 shield

bkburns,

When was your SL made? My SE was made 01/06 and I don't have a shield.
And if I logged on to "My Nissan" it say I don't have any recalls. Maybe this is called a recall

Remember this schield is NOT designed to with stand big things like you are mentioning... just smaller "normal" day to day things like rocks and small items that are on the road daily. These small itemsw will really only hit the front of the tank.

It is ugly but serves the purpose.
