NELSON-

Wow, you're even tougher on the dealers than I am. Homer's right, it could be something very quick and easy to fix. And since you only have 6,500 miles on your MO, you are still in the "free adjustments" period.

Squealing disc brakes is generally not a problem with the brake pads, or the calipers. Rather, usually the squealing is caused by the backs of the brake pads vibrating against the calipers. Usually the metal shims for the pads prevent this, but if the grease dries up on them, you get squealing. Nissan specifies a metallic grease for this purpose (I use CRC anti-squeal).

maybe I am over-reacting to the situation. Like many of the other members, I have had "cheaper" cars that I've never heard a peep from..(steering wheel also squeaks). I will take it to the dealer for correction.

Thanks for calming me down.. heheh

Hi,

I'm having the squeaky brakes when backing out of the garage in the mornings. I am going to call the dealer. I read the info about the brake pad fix. Should my 06 already have those pads?

Thanks

No. The brake pads in the TSB are different, not better.
They worked for me.

I dropped the MO off at the dealer 8am this morning for the sqeaky brakes.

Me: Will I have to pay for this or is this covered under the adjustment period since I have less than 7000 miles, purchased in January?
Service Mgr: Well, breaks are partially metallic and sounds are normal. We'll test to see if it's mechanical. If not, then you would have to pay to fix it.
(Mgr called me at 11am)
Service Mgr: We couldn't hear anything coming from the brakes. We'll have someone drive it again to really heat up the brakes and try to locate the sound. However, we won't have a driver available until about 3pm.

I don't feel too optimisic about this, but we'll see when they call me later. You figure that if you make an 8am appointment, you'll get it by lunch time. Oh well.

This is why it is very important to demonstrate the sound while one of the service technicians is riding along with you - 9 out of 10 times they don't do any "testing" other than drive it around the block once, and that usually gets you the "could not reproduce problem" statement on the service invoice.

Very true. Wish I had the time though to wait around for their "drivers" to be available. ;)

Hmm, I wonder if this Nissan offers free Wi-Fi in their waiting lounges. I know the Honda next door does. Maybe I can pick up their signal.

You should not have to pay for any repairs to fix the squeaky brakes. Nissan provides a one-year adjustment warranty to cover these things.

Just got a call from the Service Manager.

Service Mgr: Nelson, we were unable to hear anything from the brakes. What we will do for you is take the front pads off and apply this product called "Stop Squeal." It will be ready in 2 hours. Make sure you call me in a couple of days and let me know if you hear the sounds again.

Nice guy. He didn't indicate any charge for this, but I'll post it here if I do get charged. I don't know if "Stop Squeal" is an actual product or just his description of the product.

Stop Squeal is probably the brand name of a metallic grease commonly used on the brake pad backing plates. I call it "Red Goo" (see my brakes sticky under maintenance).

I hope just fixing the noise is leaving a bigger problem untreated.

It's a product.
You basically remove the pads and immerse them in this product. The product (supposedly) impregnates the pads. Let them dry and reinstall.
Works most of the time but has been known to only be a temp "fix".
A temp fix could be all you need.
The squeal is caused by the fact that several pieces are vibrating in sympathy with each other. All you have to do is disturb this sympathetic relationship and the squeal will go away.
Somtimes just putting more anti squeal goop on will do it.
So, even if the fix is temp.....the pads may wear enuf to disturb that relationship and all will be good.
Or not.

Nissan changed my brake pads to a different compound back in 03. Never heard another squeak.

Sounds good guys. This place is the best!! :D

The following is from the BG Products website http://www.bgprod.com/products/brake.html :

BG Stop Squeal
Most brake noise is caused by vibrations that occur when pressure is applied. BG Stop Squeal works on the simple principle of impregnating the brake pad with ingredients that reduce sticking between the pad and rotor. When pressure is applied, the vibrations are significantly reduced, thus brake noise is stopped or is markedly less noticeable.

Maybe they used this product or maybe "stop squeal" is a generic term around their shop.

Another website claims the BP Stop Squeal is not applicable to ceramic pads, which is what is on the MO.

Anyhow, you will know pretty soon if their fix worked.

Just an update, my brakes still squeak. It makes me believe they didn't even apply any of that "Stop Squeal." I heard the squeak again the next day. I wish I had the patience and time to keep going back to correct the problem. I'll just take it to my friend who is a Nissan Service tech and give him a couple bucks to really do the work. I should've taken it to him in the first place, but his dealership is kinda far from me.

I was going to buy an Infiniti G35 for the wifey, but scratch that. No disrespect to all you Nissan enthusiasts/lovers, but I'm going back to the Honda/Acura brand. Hey, one bad experience can do that to ya.

...just one man's opinion/preference.

2006 MO with Squealin' Brakes

Mine don't do it at all accept right in the morning, when they're cold, and ONLY when I'm backing out of my garage. Then...windows in my neighborhood shatter!

When the brakes "warm up" it doesn't happen any more.

Regards,

Big
