I bet he is confuse now after seeing Enforcer's diagram! ;)
(No punt intended).

You Bet SugarRush!!! lol
i guess that all means that is possible, correct Enfocer?
:1:
I'm going this weekend to my local dealer to get the part #s

So just to confirm:

It is posible to replace the Orange Screen for the LCD and still have 100% use of the original functions
right?

And The NAV?

thanx guys...

Yes if Moses was a EE

(Assuming he is available) Otherwise not worth the effort

Well anything is possible but I can almost guarantee you that by the time you add up the cost of parts, labour, time and frustration, an easier (and potentially cheaper) way would be to trade your MO in for a new model with the NAV.

Yup thats the way it was back in 03 when I looked. But, after 3 years of MOs there has to be some parts showing up out there. The trick is to get the list of parts then look around salvage ebay etc. May take a while. Maybe only buy one or 2 from dealer, then it might be reasonable.

LOL Moses yeah hehe. Yes it is possible and all will function right if you use the OEM parts obviously.

Well, a lot more research and work on how to communicate with the car got no where. Basically, Nissan uses CAN to talk to everything in the radio/NAV/Display/etc, and while not impossible, deciphering the CAN bus traffic is pretty rough. The guys here at work think they may encrypt it as well, or at least obfuscate it to keep people out. If you can read the protocol, you can write it, and then things get really bad for the car. Note that no aftermarket equipment I know of taps any data on the CAN bus for any car I've heard of.

It's possible, but not probable. I've given up on snooping CAN, tried to go and snoop the LED signals, gave up on that, thought about replacing the LED chip with something homegrown, gave up on that real fast, and have decided to try and do a HUD now instead, which could be real cool. More details to follow.

The problem isn't the screen so much, but the HW and logic that drive it. Anything graphical needs two things, one being a display controller, and the other GUI software. So, even if the connetions are the same, the backend won't be. To be fair, given the cost diff between an LCD and an LED display, I'm surprised they didn't do this right off the bat and add $500 beans to the cost of the car from the beginning.

CAN BUS

Here is some technical information about the CAN bus.

http://www.interfacebus.com/Design_Connector_CAN.html

It seems to me that it would be completely possible to use a software application to receive information via the CAN bus and present it on a screen. I seriously doubt that once you have the data in a serial stream of bytes that it is a very complicated protocol.

Atmel (common to anyone familiar with microcontrollers) actually makes a line of CAN-capable microcontrollers.

http://www.atmel.com/products/CAN/

So, if you already have a computer in your Murano, you're half way there. Now you just need software to process the CAN data and present it in a nice UI.

Too bad I have a job already...this could get time-consuming. :)

Pahleeeeezzzz Do a step by step with pics topic about how to replace the goddamn OEM =[
and can u plz make a topic explaining what r the parts needed and how much they cost?
seriously cuz reading this topic is sorta confusing ><
and im still waiting for the pics we were promised ><
Thanx guys and im so sorry for asking alot but its just that I hate the orange screen ><
Bubye ppl :)

The answer to your persistent question, in short, is that it cannot be done. Unless, of course, you are an electrical genius (which some of our guys here are!) with loads of time and money on your hands. I think that it has been done once with great difficulty and expense by buying a large quantity on oem parts and splicing a lot of oem harnesses. (if I remember correctly, it never worked exactly right either). Your best bet is to just either:
-move the oem screen to the bottom of the dash
-setup a camera that will display a view of the old screen in it's new location on your new screen
-have a custom enclosure made somewhere else to house the new screen

I have been after a solution for this since I bought my car, and it just does not seem to be realistically possible to have a completely factory install.

You don't need to be a genius, just have some knowledge in assembling embedded computers. I'm not a genius, but I can put all this together. I'm just missing two pieces. The first is the CAN protocol that Nissan uses, which I believe is encrypted to some extent to keep people from snooping. Many cars have had their CAN network decoded, but to date, the more recent Nissan models have not that I can find. The controller, the display, and the car computer are all relatively easy. The other is time. There are a lot of pieces to put this together which will take several months of pretty solid effort. I've done some of the software already, but there's a lot more to be done. As soon as someone decodes the CAN network and can read (note, writing to the CAN network will kill your car most likely) the data being displayed on the display, then shoot me a message and I'll get back into this. I have all the parts minus the LCD and CAN board. And I found the perfect LCD display to use.

Ok so i dont care about the screen functioning the same, but i want like a kenwood screen and I was wondering if i can integrate the buttons to work within the screen?
erik-

It hasn't been done yet, but that doesn't mean you can't be the first.

An easier approach might be to relocate the orange screen to the bottom of the console and put the Kenwood in it's place. Now that has been done.

Do what i did trade it in on another Mo with NAV! Sorry but it is cheaper IMHO that anything elxe you can do.

I think Grip is right, but I don't think you even need to get NAV anymore since the new Mo's come with color screens that can be tapped into.

has anyone with an 05 taken a color screen and the navi audio video controller and just hooked it up with out the DVD box and seen what happens? I just ordered the audio / video controller for my 05 SL and I have a color screen out of an 07.
if I have too ill make my own harness for it =p
I bet It doesn't even have the right wires to hook it up heh.

Back to the first post..

Did you drill the holes Neatly or unsolder and remount?
