Replace orange OEM screen with colour screen

The way I did it was to actually disassemble the screen, unsolder the IR receiver off the buttons PC board, extend its wires and place it down below. A less "clean" job would be to dril a hole on the MO's screen face plate so the IR receiver can "see" the remote.

I will take a picture of where I now have the receiver and post.

I don't know if I am handy enough to be unsoldering IR sensors..... I don't want to drill a hole either in the screen face plate.

Hoping there is a creative solution out there that I havnt thought about...

Actually it is not too bad but just like any "operation" things can go wrong...

I am not sure if it is doable but how about a fiber cable (the type that transmitts light like those they use in stereo systems for audio)with one end fixed in front of the sensor and the other end somewhere where you can hold the remote against?????

Or an elaborate system of mirrors....

Just some thoughts....

But seriously it should not be a big problem. The key is to have a right soldering iron and practice on something else before you approach the screen.

Hi zeb,

can you post the picture when you have a chance? I may give this a try. Whats the worst that could happen? The IR might stop working but that aint working currently anyway

I don't have a install thread as I did not have a camera to take pictures at the time. There are some pictures in my gallery you can look at though.

I used a regular telephone wire to extend my IR sensor using three out of the four wires inside. The trickiest part of the whole thing is disassembling the liliiput housing and being very careful with the ribbon cables while doing so. The cable connectors are very fragile and can break easily.

HERE you will find some nice pictures of the insides of the lilliput. Depending on which model you have, the buttons PCB may be different from the one pictured but you should only have three solder points to worry about. Take your time and make sure you use a heat sink to prevent damaging the PCB or the sensor. Also note the way it has been soldered so you do not cross the wires.

Before taking your lilliput apart, I also recommend you read the threads HERE so amongst other things you can learn how to program your lilliput so that it would automatically turn on. Please note that these pictures and links are mostly for lilliputs without a TV but they may also work on those as well.

Doh!... I thought someone finally hacked the murano display controller... got me all excited

Too bad then, I've done carputer before...still have the lilliput, via board, and yellow cap battery from the old car in my garage.

Well I'm waiting for the 06 service manual to be available. I'm thinking the easiest way for pre-06 models would be to retrofit with 06 parts...may not be cheapest though and SW may be a problem.

Buying another Murano at this point is not a financial option for me! (After all I have to buy lots of gas now...)

Not quite given up, but I got some really difficult bad news today from a friend in the biz. Essentially, all the data on the 13 segment display is delivered over the CAN bus. It's a proprietary Nissan protocol that at best would be difficult to decode, and most likely impossible. However, that leaves me with no useful options just now. Basically, I have most of the HW, and a lot of half integrated SW (got bluetooth handsfree + SMS displays sorta working) that can't really be used. GAH!

Lcd / Nav

Ok, I’ve spent the last month reading threads looking at all different available options to replace the ugly looking (by 2006 standards) orange screen for my 2005 SL (I know, should have gotten the NAV factory installed)

Now, this is what I’ve found:

NO CLEAR ANSWER

This is what I would like to know, and if someone replies, please be straight forward, I would appreciate it.

BASIC UPGRADE:

- CAN I REPLACE THE ORANGE SCREEN FOR A NICE LOOKING LCD WITHOUT LOOSING ANY FUNCTIONS? >NO NAV, JUST LIKE THE ‘06
* IF NOT, PLEASE, WHY NOT?

- IF THE FIRST UPGRADE IS POSIBLE, CAN I INSTALL THE NAV SYSTEM ON IT?

Now, I know that there are a lot of threads regarding this topic, but many of them, are already over 2 months old, and tech. changes; and many of this threads, just recommend alternatives which involve damaging the original look of the Murano.

I would really appreciate any help.

It is posible to replace the Orange Screen for the LCD and still have 100% use of the original functions
right?

And The NAV?

Well anything is possible but I can almost guarantee you that by the time you add up the cost of parts, labour, time and frustration, an easier (and potentially cheaper) way would be to trade your MO in for a new model with the NAV.

Yup thats the way it was back in 03 when I looked. But, after 3 years of MOs there has to be some parts showing up out there. The trick is to get the list of parts then look around salvage ebay etc. May take a while. Maybe only buy one or 2 from dealer, then it might be reasonable.

LOL Moses yeah hehe. Yes it is possible and all will function right if you use the OEM parts obviously.
